The Katz Underwear Company was founded in 1898 by three brothers; Jacob, Jonas and Samuel in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. In 1902 their initial establishment grew too small so the Katz Factory on 6th Street was built. Their sales offices were in the Empire State Building, wherein they stayed for almost 55 years; one of the longest running tenants in the building's existence! The company eventually had over 7000 accounts in the United States and around the world. The factory had undergone several expansions in that time.
The company closed in 1993 and the building was bought by Rudy Schemitz who operated his family business, New Wave Woodworking. New Wave eventually outgrew the building too and moved to their current location in White Mills. Rudy, his family and team, along with the current business owners in the building, have worked hard to bring this factory back to its original glory.
After extensive restoration and renovation, the Katz Factory is now home to eight businesses: Bodhi Tree Art School and Studio, Quality Printing and Design, Davaahs Canvas Creations, Rustic Charm Vintage Rentals, Hop Barons, Michelle Lee Photography and 6th & River. Each space is beautiful and unique.
When I walked into what was then a very dusty, dirty and machine-filled room, all I could think was what it could be if brought back to life. Seeing the renovations at Bodhi Tree and Quality Printing was beyond inspiring and having worked on our own 120 year old barn and farm for many years (Fox Hill Farm), we weren't strangers to the work. 6th & River itself is on the 2nd floor of the original footprint of the building where once rows of women sat at their sewing machines. The now exposed brick, eighteen six-foot windows overlooking the Lackawaxen River, cathedral ceilings, styled mezzanine lounge and new floors definitely have turned out to be a great place to celebrate and the list of people who made it possible in small and large ways are as numerous as the celebratory possibilities! May the success of the prior companies in this gorgeous building carry on to all those who work and play within its walls!
