Just a quick field check and adding in some soils amendments to the hoop rows and field to take advantage of the free water, as it’s been so rare! So grateful for the cool down!
Since we did not till the hoop house at all, we’ve had to amend the native soil here and there to stabilize nutrients and keep our microorganisms and plants thriving.
We started this experiment with cardboard and woodchips over lawn, top dressed the beds using fully rotted compost/manure, in the spring fed with compost tea using worm castings and mycorrhizae, now just adding a slow release rock phosphate and blood meal.
Sheet mulching is an awesome way to get started, but if not broken down properly, the leftover materials can uptake a lot of nitrogen as it breaks down (like browns in compost). For this reason - we tend to need a little extra nitrogen to help feed young plants.
We do fully recommend that you check your soil nutrient levels prior to adding any amendments - you may not need them.
