Just a little, did you know…
In 1936 the last of the Minor family moved out of Southdown Plantation & Museum. From then until 1975 the house was used by Southdown Sugar Mill personnel. The house had become very run down from lack of maintenance and care.

Around this time, a group of local concerned citizens formed the Terrebonne Historical and Cultural Society, a non-profit organization we call “THACS”.

Ownership of Southdown at that time was held by Valhi, Inc., a subsidiary of Southdown Sugar. Valhi, Inc. planned to tear down the house and servants quarters to develop the land.

Not so fast Valhi… 😉
On January 18, 1974, Through the hard work of THACS, Southdown was placed on the National Register of Historic Places!

In June of 1975, Valhi, Inc. donated Southdown Plantation, Servants Quarters and 4.46 acres of land to the non-profit, THACS!

THACS spent the next 7 years, through donations and grants doing restoration work and opened the property as Southdown Plantation/The Terrebonne Museum in 1982.

When sugarcane was king of the south. Through Southdown Plantation & Museum, the Minors were instrumental in introducing and sustaining the sugar industry in the area, and ensuring the survival of the crop by developing a variety of sugar cane that was resistant to mosaic disease. Southdown’s sugar mill was the last of the 86 sugar mills that had operated in Terrebonne Parish during the sugar boom of the 19th century. Dismantled in 1979, the mill was shipped to Guatemala where it was reassembled and continued operations.
