​​​All around Africa and beyond, traditional weddings are dying out with the normalization and influx of the Western African weddings. The importance and the richness of African weddings cannot however not be overestimated.The marriage between a man and a woman is a special celebration of the natural continuity of life in every part of Africa. In all the communities all over Africa, and especially in the Nigerian culture, the coming together of both the bride and groom's families is very important to the sustenance of the new union. Each family is treated with maximum respect because the new couple are not just getting married to each other but both families are deemed to be forming a new union. To marry a new bride, the groom's family come together and come, bearing good gifts to the bride's family and to the bride. The gifts are brought in splendor and the bride is usually asked to pick which of the beautifully designed gifts she treasures most. For Christians, the bride is expected to pick the Holy Bible and for Muslims, she picks the Holy Quran. This ceremony is so important that most members of the society believe that all that we do in life culminates in the joy to be experienced on this beautiful day. The joy felt by the couple is as equal if not more profound as the joy the parents feel. The sense of fulfillment at a job well done on an occasion when your "child" is finally becoming a Man or a Woman as the case may be. This explains why African parents seem to be so involved in the planning involved in this very joyous occasion.
