What is this Shrimp Queen Thing?

I was born and raised in Pascagoula, Mississippi which is near the Biloxi Gulf Coast. My mom had 8 brothers and sisters so there was always HUGE gatherings at my grandma’s house where we would cook for the entire family - cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. The shrimp and fishing industry were very prominent and many activities were centered around coastal activities such as: Shrimp & Crab Festivals, Blessings of the Fleet and other events. Pascagoula was the main hub for shipbuilding industries and still holds major contracts for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard.

So, about the name Shrimp Queen - In 1988, I entered a pageant for “Miss Gulf Coast Shrimp Queen” during the Shrimp Festival and won... so friends and family would jokingly call me the “Shrimp Queen” over the years. I decided to combine my love for cooking gumbo with that title and that is how “Shrimp Queen Gumbo” was born.
