My love of cooking started at a very young age. My dream was to be a chef! I would constantly create dishes for my family to try, some better than the rest, but doing so made me realize I wanted to do more than just create dishes for my family. I wanted it to be my career.
My senior year of high school I attended the culinary arts program at Mt. Joy Career and Technology Center (CTC). Here is where I learned the basics in the kitchen. I placed first in an in-house culinary competition, which allowed me to represent Mt. Joy CTC at Skills USA, a culinary competition that was comprised of culinary arts students from all over. I placed second in districts at Skills USA. I was also chosen to cook along Anne Burrell, a well-known culinary arts connoisseur, at a food expo in Lancaster City. Due to the skills that I showed at CTC, I was offered a job at The Pressroom Restaurant in Lancaster City right after high school. I moved my way up from a prep cook to a line cook, working full time at only 18 years old. Apart from working pantry, operating the pizza station, and learning the grill station, I also ran Sunday Brunch alongside one of my co-workers. CTC is where I learned the basics, but working at the Pressroom is where I really started to develop my craft.
I became very interested in the nutrition aspect of food, so I left The Pressroom and decided to go back to school at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) in Lancaster. I majored in pre-dietetics at HACC, and after two years I transferred to West Chester University with nutrition as my major. I will graduate with my Bachelor’s in Nutrition and Dietetics in the Fall of 2020, and upon completion of my dietetic internship, I will become a Registered Dietition (RD). I am currently completing my Master’s in community nutrition as well.
Although my plans are to become a dietitian, opening a cafe has always been a dream of mine. During my time at West Chester I was constantly cooking at home. I started focusing on living a healthy lifestyle and altered my cooking style to represent that. I started catering family parties, and slowly started selling my food on Instagram and Facebook. My experience in the kitchen and my drive to achieve my goal of having a cafe has led to the creation of my page, Gourmet Julie’s Way.
