With all the negativity lately, I felt it was time for a positive post.
Last night I had the opportunity to DJ an Adult (21+) Prom. Based on the fact this was their first attempt for the event, combined with the variety of songs requests pouring in via their page, I had tempered expectations. Past experiences at things like weddings taught me some people can get pretty belligerent when they aren’t fed a steady stream of the specific genre of music they like. Couple that with an age range (and I’m not making this up) of 21 to 97 and who knows what I was going to be in for. I had enough pre-event requests to fill over 5 hours spanning at least 5 decades, and the event was only 4 (with an hour for dinner and breaks for King and Queen crowning.)
Before I knew it, it was GO time…time to pull out all the stops. Things started well, dance floor packed, but now the challenge was to keep it that way. My mixing skills aren’t anything like being able to hold a continuous mix all night, but I was pulling stuff out of nowhere and sounded half decent. At least one person noticed and came up to complement on it, as well as other random complements throughout the night. Things were definitely going exponentially better than I could have imagined.
End of the night comes with “Don’t Stop Believin” as the entire dance floor belting it out. Yes, that song so cliché but also cathartic for me as that’s the high any DJ chases. Went so well it afforded me an encore song and I can’t tell you when I last had that opportunity.
At a time when, for various reasons, I’ve wondered I should even continue being a mobile DJ, this was the event I needed for the encouragement to continue.
