Another Book Review! Book Review

The Life and Adventures of Pineapple Sam Vol I is quite a fascinating book. The humour and drama are well incorporated in the Hawaiian context. The story is not only enjoyable but it is also entertaining and educational. The book grapples also portray issues of identity, belonging, family, and the impact of war on the mind. At times the episodic form of the story causes a slight disunity in the narrative, however each of the separate chapters is interesting.

I appreciate how Sam’s character is lovable and even more, how he remains strong despite the odds; that is one quality that I admire. This book is even better recommended to the readers who prefer adventure biographies, memoirs and development stories.

The same pattern is maintained, that is from adventures in infancy to adolescence, military service and other common activities. The author adopted an episodic style so that each chapter would illustrate a certain event or crisis in Sam’s life, while the chronological movement would continue until it reaches the point of why he joined U.S Marine Corps. The flow is steady; there are ‘duller’ comic interludes placed within serious reflections. It helps maintain interest in the narration without throwing complicated themes at the reader.

The novel follows the goal of writing the individual passages from a perspective where different humanistic concerns come to the surface. The island abounds with inaccessible lands and medieval historical fortresses, thus hampering the author in his great creative endeavors and even further aggravating the conflict inside. The vegetation, the sounds of nature, and busy plantation life are such that one can feel the Hawaiian heat. Kauai is not a setting but another character that molds Sam’s experiences. The pineapple fields, the fishing spots, and the humble house put the reader in that particular geographic location, whereby, one can feel being in the narrator’s place.

All the stuff in the book ‘Punches’ and stuff is just WOW. The editing is also perfect with no errors, and everything associated with Sam’s was entertaining to some extent. I however cut one star off because of the book's cover page. It is my opinion that a book of this class should be presented with an appealing cover page that seeks the reader’s attention.
