This is a really cool story
Kayaking over the Madeira shipwreck
This has been a bucket list shot of mine for years, and I am glad to have finally made it happen!
The Madeira was sunk and destroyed during the worst storm in recorded history on Lake Superior on November 28, 1905.
In this photo, you can see the bow section under the left buoy, a bit of the stern section under the right buoy, and a large chunk of the ship off to the right side of Gold Rock Point. While my wife and I were out on our kayak, we also found large chunks of metal from the Madeira washed up along the rocky shoreline from 1905.
To give some sense of size of this scene, the kayak is 14’ in length. The Madeira was 436’ in length. The wreck spans the area all around Gold Rock Point and is in a depth of 15-100’ under the surface.
Disclaimer: to capture this photo, my drone flight was launched, operated, and landed outside of Minnesota State Park and Minnesota Historical Society property
