Profound statements couples have recently shared with me that might make you think differently about your wedding entertainment:
▪️”We never listen to this music, why would we listen to it on our wedding day?”
▪️”We want a DJ who isn’t an MC.” ▪️”We don’t want to hear the same tired, overplayed wedding songs.”
▪️”We went to a wedding and we have lots of notes to share with you.”

June has been a whirlwind of a month in the best way possible. After a relaxing visit to Kaya Vineyards, I flew out to Malibu for a wedding at one of my favorite places, Cielo Farms. Once celebrating the happy couple with an epic party wrapped up, it was back to Atlanta to start my new residency at The Sylvan Hotel. Managed to sneak in some walks and play fetch with Butch between connecting with brides-to-be and practicing the saxophone. Before I knew it, Music City was calling my name. Currently, I’m in Nashville for the WIPA mid-year retreat working on some exciting projects and strategizing for what’s to come. The last time I was here was for , where I had the honor of moderating a panel and learning alongside some of the best DJs in the country. I truly have the best job in the world. The fact that this is “work” is never lost on me.

“We didn’t want to dance and you didn’t force us into a party agenda. Thank you”. Honoring the wishes of my couples is paramount. Even if that request is typically the opposite of what I am asked to do. Weddings and DJing are not one size fits all. I’m a firm believer that you can provide great music that both the crowd and couple will love, while also building the hype without shoving dancing down anyone’s throat. Miixing both the familiar and surprising together is a delicate art. It’s about giving the people what they didn’t realize they want.

Something I’ve really been enjoying lately? Picking up the saxophone and learning new songs. While I initially began playing for fun and then practiced a ton prior to incorporating it into my offerings, it’s been something I’ve been gravitating to more and more these days. Always looking for new and challenging songs to master, drop your recommendations below.

Have you ever thought about why you like a specific song? Maybe your brain is drawn to pop music because of the full-sounding beat and compressed vocals. Or you could be captivated by lyrics that paint a picture so vivid you feel as though you were there. The list of reasons is endless. Funnily enough, most people assume that if anyone else likes the same song, it’s for the exact same reasons that they love it. People connect with different elements of music, and it’s cool to witness these moments happen in real time when DJing. Taking it one step further, it’s even more intriguing to see how people react to songs when the saxophone comes out.

Any DJs remember the days of purchasing catalogs of music and carrying literal crates of CDs into gigs? Once Napster got into hot water and piracy laws were front and center, major record labels made it a point to make an example out of those that infringed on copyright laws. Asking to borrow CDs from another DJ brought hesitation so most DJs ended up with a subscription for Promo Only CDs. These discs were mailed regularly and included a variety of the current best hits. In order to mix in and out of songs on the equipment at the time, you needed two copies of the same CD. Now you see why a crate (or 5) was necessary. Hard to believe but you also couldn’t DJ on a laptop at the time, only plug in hardware was available. As the industry evolved, DJs welcomed an LCD screen with digital interface that allowed you to access songs which was a massive step forward. The tricky part was you had to type out the exact title of the song (without any spelling errors). It’s crazy to think back and see just how far DJing has come. The best part is that in twenty years it’s going to look completely different again.

It’s an undeniable fact that this career is filled with considerably more happy moments than most peoples professions. Something that’s been beyond cool to witness over the last decade has been how WIPA has grown and spread. It’s crazy to think back to a time when the wedding industry wasn’t taken as seriously and viewed as a hobbyist gig. The J. Lo movie didn’t do us any favors. When I started my business, one of the first things I did was join WIPA. To say this organization has been a huge part of my life over the last 8 years would be an understatement. When you’re successful and doing well, it’s easy to forget just how much you benefited from something. The knowledge, networking and professional development opportunities available are all due to strong leadership and the vision of those at the helm. This past week, I was honored to get on the mic at the WIPA Houston Town Hall to connect with some of the newest prospective WIPA members. Helping build something worthwhile and giving back is extremely fulfilling for me. I can’t take any credit for the tremendous impact WIPA has made, but I can do my part as the Chapter in Formation Director to help this organization continue to evolve, offer value to our members and as a result, help clients celebrate the happiest moments of their life.

You’ve heard of resting bitch face, but are you familiar with the term DJing bitch face? What might look super intense to an outsider is just me giving my full focus and concentration to taking the party to the next level. When I’m DJing, know that I’m having a great time, even if I look mad as hell. Unless of course a guest is making a terrible song request and insisting it gets played… That might result in a music mean mug, which is completely different than DJBF.

What’s one thing that’s worth its weight in gold to you? As a DJ, it’s hiring an assistant for each event. While others might think having an extra set of hands is overkill, I find it invaluable. It’s impossible for me to be in two places at once. Throughout a wedding, an assist will:
▪️Help with setup, sound check and breakdown
▪️Field song requests from guests that are coming up to the DJ booth so my train of thought isn’t interrupted constantly
▪️Notify the venue staff when someone breaks a glass on the dance floor or if another issue arises
▪️Let the photographer know when we plan to change the lighting so they can switch lenses in advance
▪️Keep things under control so I can momentarily step away to check in with the couple and connect with the planner

This list isn’t comprehensive by any means but highlights just some of the ways an assistant can support a DJ during an event.

What’s one thing you’ll catch me looking at nonstop throughout the night other than the dance floor? Hint: it has all the music on it. My HP is absolutely essential, which is why I always travel with two laptops (my main and a backup). If you’ve ever accidentally left a laptop on an airplane (guilty), witnessed a drink almost break a world record for distance traveled that inadvertently makes its way on to the electronics, or seen the dreaded blue screen of death, you know the importance of having a backup on hand. Accidents happen, but that shouldn’t stop the party.

Beyond grateful to have the opportunity to DJ in some of the world’s most breathtaking destinations. From sunny California (pictured) to islands in the Indian Ocean, I never know where a wedding might take me. Last month’s locale was nothing short of paradise. Excited to share more of the beautiful Finolhu Baa Atoll wedding soon.

02/27/2024

“We can tell you take your work very seriously, are extremely detail oriented and meticulous.” That’s certainly not something you hear during every introduction call. When the couple shared more about how they came to this conclusion prior to us ever meeting, it caused me to reflect. It’s in my nature to be overly prepared and go above and beyond to ensure every event is a success. For a recent international wedding, some people were a little surprised to hear that in addition to my regular preparation leading up to the event, I:
▪️Woke up in the middle of the night to check/respond to emails because I considered the business hours of the locale instead of expecting their staff to conform to my schedule
▪️Ensured all power and equipment needs were communicated and agreed upon far in advance
▪️Flew to the destination early to ensure I wouldn’t be jetlagged after 30+ hours of travel
▪️Took the time to research and apply for an international business visa so that everything was by the book

Ambiguity is a recipe for disaster. Each event presents its own unique set of challenges based off a number of factors. Couples and clients are hiring you not only for your talent, but your ability to anticipate and solve issues before they occur. Investigating the details, taking the time to educate yourself and staying on top of all the moving pieces is a no-brainer. The worst-case scenario is that you spend extra time troubleshooting scenarios that won’t ever transpire and are over prepared. To me, that sounds like the best-case scenario.

That feeling when you remember the 34th Annual Allie Awards are in 50 days… Each year, I look forward to gathering with the best of the best and celebrating the talented visionaries that design, plan and produce transformative experiences. If you’re not familiar with the “Allies,” the easiest way to describe it is that it’s basically the Academy Awards for the Georgia events industry. I’m beyond grateful to have had opportunities to attend, MC the Award Show and DJ the After Party in the past. Last year, I took home the award for Best Entertainment under $10K and it was truly surreal. Who else is ready for a fun evening honoring the innovators of our industry?

“I cannot say enough about Krieger and the incredible job he did at our wedding! From the very beginning, it was clear that he was not just a DJ, but a true professional who cared deeply about making our special day perfect. My now husband and I had a few DJs recommended to us and none of them even slightly compared to Kreiger. He has the remarkable ability to transform any dance floor or group of people into an absolute party. He played the perfect mix of songs that had everyone, from our youngest guests to the grandparents, on their feet and dancing the night away. What sets Krieger apart is his dedication to getting to know his clients and understanding their wedding goals. We had the pleasure of having two Zoom calls with him before our big day, and it was not only informative but also a delightful experience. He offered valuable insights on everything related to wedding and music, which was incredibly helpful in planning our event. On the day of our wedding, we encountered unexpected weather issues that led us to change the location of the dance floor. Krieger's flexibility and positivity during this unexpected and stressful issue was remarkable. He worked with us to move the dance floor to the venue barn and, let me tell you, he absolutely crushed it. The atmosphere he created in that barn was electric, and our guests couldn't stop raving about the music. One highlight of our wedding was the silent disco that our wedding planner and Krieger recommended. If you're considering it, don't hesitate—just do it! You will not regret it! It was an absolute hit and a memorable experience for guests of all ages. It was the highlight for us and so many of the guests. Krieger is a phenomenal DJ who not only has incredible musical talent but also goes above and beyond to ensure your wedding day is unforgettable. His dedication to understanding your vision, responsiveness, and flexibility in adapting to unexpected changes make him a true professional and a pleasure to work with. Our wedding would not have been the same without him, and we can't recommend him enough! Thank you, Krieger, for making our day so special.” – Nikky & Troy via Google

It’s hard to put into words the magic that happens when you get 180+ creatives together. The DJ Collective absolutely killed it for . The energy at every event was next level, the speakers were thought-provoking and the knowledge shared is going to help our industry evolve in exciting ways. Still reminiscing over all the remarkably talented DJs I had the privilege of connecting with. As usual, Phillip Van Nostrand brilliantly captured this event through his lens.

Reflecting back on 2023 and I’m deeply appreciative of the amazing couples, corporate clients and talented professionals I’ve had the opportunity of working with over the past year. It might sound cliché, corny and maybe even a tad pretentious, but I truly have the best job in the world. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your special day, milestone celebrations and momentous occasions. It’s an honor and a privilege to be included. I’m not trying to romanticize this career because it’s a lot of hard work and definitely has its fair share of less than glamorous moments, but it’s more rewarding and fulfilling than I can put into words. If you would have told 17 year-old Krieger this is what I would get to do, I would never have believed you. Although it should have been pretty obvious when all I wanted to do during high school marching band parties was pick the songs and spent an obscene amount of time creating my own playlists. There was absolutely nothing worse than having to listen to lame music. If we’re being real, there still isn’t anything worse.

Although it’s going to be pretty hard to top 2023, next year is already looking very bright. Looking forward to seeing what it has in store for all of us. Here’s to (almost) another year in the books and the exciting times ahead!

What are you doing this month to get better? I’m talking about investing in yourself and going above and beyond working more events so that you are one step closer to saying you have an additional year of experience in the industry… Attending The DJ Collective is one of the ways I continue to improve and hone my craft. Hundreds of DJs from around the world gather to learn and grow with the common goal to advance our skills and the industry. Earth-shattering conversations take place that change not only the way you think, but how you run your business. Each DJ is so different in terms of how they DJ, how they talk on the mic, their target client, the way they run their company, etc. A big takeaway from was how I can refine my processes and continue to fine tune my skills. It’s rewarding to discover ways to improve and know you are getting better each year. That’s only a small snippet of some of the knowledge this amazing panel (Broc Barton, DJ PINKE, DJ D. Jones, DJ Russ Powell and myself) shared with the 48+ first-time attendees from this photo.

Are you timeless or trendy?
Personally, I consider myself to be timeless. James Bond instantly comes to mind as the epitome of a classic. Throughout his 25 movies, 007 is seen sporting an Omega watch, sipping a martini in the company of a beautiful woman, driving an Aston Martin as his getaway car, etc. From his first film to his final one, these elements remain at the core of his persona. Recently, couples seem to be heavily fixated on incorporating the latest trends into their wedding with a focus on instant gratification. What’s quick and cheap oftentimes doesn’t translate to the most memorable experience. Has the best meal of your life been from Chipotle or a three-star Michelin restaurant with mixologists creating speciality cocktails and master chefs preparing thoughtfully curated courses that surprise and delight your senses? When planning your dream day, don’t forget to stay true to your vision and how you want to remember your celebration for years to come. I guarantee you that years from now nobody will remember if you had a Champagne tower. What will stick out in their memory is watching you exchange heartfelt vows, dancing the night away together and the overall feeling your celebration leaves them with.

My weekday office 🎧 While I love DJing weddings, corporate functions hold a special place in my heart. Last month, I had the honor of DJing PMI’s Global Summit for three days packed full of high-energy events that showcased how much this company truly values and celebrates their team. Corporate events are SO different than weddings. Imagine an awards show with 3,000+ attendees gathered around a stage in the middle of the room and honorees are coming up nonstop. With an event this massive, it’s no surprise that the entire vendor team wore headsets to communicate and orchestrate this fast-paced event seamlessly. Truth be told, it reminded me a lot of when I worked in live television. The unique challenges presented when DJing corporate functions extend beyond the sheer size and logistics. One of the biggest puzzles is figuring out how to appeal to such a diverse audience. Selecting not only a set list that includes multiple genres, but having time to mix in and out of them in a captivating way within the time limitations is a delicate art. I’m completely in my element in these moments, working to enhance the overall experience by curating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere that entertains and fosters a stronger connection between the guests and the event.

“You were outstanding,” is one of the biggest compliments you can receive from a bride as a DJ. Now take into consideration that I wasn’t given any Must Play songs, there was no Do Not Play list and the couple only provided a handful of dance songs. Being given complete creative control is the hugest honor and speaks volumes to the level of trust a couple has in me. Prioritizing getting to know each person on an individual level, their taste and their vision for their wedding gives me the unique ability to make split second decisions so they can enjoy the party they’ve been planning for months and dreaming about for a lifetime. At this wedding, there were a few time I was on the fence about something and thought about asking the newlyweds but didn’t want to steal them away from the party. I trusted my instincts and made some judgement calls. Each time, it ended up resonating well with the crowd. The dance floor doesn’t lie. When the bride shared her kind words with me at the end of the night, it further reinforced how crucial trust really is.

How many of your close friends and family get to see you in your element? As a creative, there’s nothing quite like being able to share your talents with your people. How do you experience and appreciate music? Music has the unique power to elicit intense emotional and psychophysiological responses. I won’t go into the nerdy science behind it all, but it’s pretty cool if you think about it. Some songs or artists resonate so deeply with a listener that hearing them causes a visceral reaction. One of the things I love about Mandy is the joy she gets from live music. We recently saw the The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie and The Beth’s perform at the Hollywood Bowl’s as part of their 20th anniversary tour. Going to concerts is something we both really enjoy, but the way we experience them could not be more different. Mandy is cheering, dancing, singing and just the happiest ever. To anyone in attendance, it’s obvious she’s having the time of her life. I, on the other hand, just stand and stare with what some might consider a dumb look on my face. In reality, I’m taking it all in. My mind is watching the band perform, appreciating the lighting and how it changes color to build up anticipation and flashes during drops, analyzing the stage setup for that specific venue and thinking about ways I can incorporate different elements into my next performance. It’s a poignant experience and one I cherish deeply. I can’t wait to attend more concerts in the new year. Anyone you’re looking forward to seeing in 2024?
