🌟 Ridgeview Celebrates Black History Month 🌟

From the days of slavery to the present, Black couples have woven a powerful tapestry of love and commitment in shaping our history.

Richard Allen and Sarah Bass Allen marked a historic moment in 1794 as the first known legally married African American couple. Richard, a former slave turned minister, founded the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church.

The legal recognition of Black marriages faced struggles until the 1967 Loving v. Virginia case, striking down anti-miscegenation laws. This victory, alongside the Civil Rights Movement, culminated in the nullification of the last state anti-miscegenation laws in 1968.

As we celebrate Black History Month, let's honor the legacy of Black marriages—a story of love, determination, and triumph over challenges that continues to inspire.
