IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Green background with a light green frame. Prayer by: Thea: God, We know you are in control of everything on earth and in Heaven. We know your way is the best way and your path is the best path. We ask you to take our hearts to the place where we seek your will more than our own. To a place where we set aside any selfish motives and choose to do what Jesus taught us. Let us prayerfully search our hearts and minds to vote with our choices aligned with yours. We pray for your strength and compassion to touch the hearts of others as well, so that they may be led to make the best decisions in this election and in the days after the election.

Last Sunday, we practiced an ancient Hawaiian practice called Ho'oponopono that combines love, forgiveness, repentance, and gratitude in four powerful phrases. Four simple phrases that heal the soul. They are:

I’m sorry.

Please forgive me.

Thank you.

I love you

Dr. Hew Len worked in a mental hospital for criminals for four years. Patients there were sedated and often even shackled. Staff called in sick a lot because their job was so challenging.

But this therapist turned all that around. The psychologist would study an inmate’s chart and then look within himself to see how he has taken part in such a person’s illness. Even if his part was apathy towards a patient like this one, Dr. Len used the practice as a way to free himself from shame. As he improved himself, the patient improved. He did it solely by working on himself, doing an updated version of the ancient Hawaiian healing practice.

THE PRACTICE. Put your hand on your heart. And take a deep breath. Think of someone who you need to forgive. Don’t go into detail of what was done to you, just picture that person in your mind.

Now, repeat the four phrases several times:

I’m sorry.

Please forgive me.

Thank you.

I love you.

Hawaiian practitioners say that we need to practice this mantra for 21 days in a row to “put away…all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice”.
