James Johnson, AKA DJ Trigga Bashment was born and raised in Bronx, NY. Growing up during a time when the streets were dangerous and life was challenging, Trigga focused on school and sports, often playing basketball outside with his friends. Like many kids his age, he dreamed of playing in the NBA. When he wasn’t on the court, he also enjoyed listening to music and spent his spare time listening to WBLS 107.5, and KISS FM, which would later become Hot 97.
In his younger years, Trigga’s mom was the primary inspiration towards his love of music. She used to play all genres around the house, never realizing that she was transitioning from one genre to the next so seamlessly. At the time, Trigga didn’t even know himself until he started to get into deejaying and learned what she had been doing all this time would later help him become a solid dj. To this day, his mom never knew the role she plays in her son’s career as a DJ.
In 1998, Trigga Bashment first touched a turntable that belonged to one of his neighborhood friends that also happened to be a dj. While he had fun with it for a little while, he was still more focused on working and playing basketball.
After studying hard, Trigga graduated high school and was off to college. In early 2001, his best friend used to play at a college radio station (TCI Radio), and Trigga would come to the station periodically to mess around with the turntables. While in the student lounge, his friend invited him up to play some music, and Trigga impressed them with some mixes and scratches. After this day, Trigga started to hang out with his friend more and got more practice in. His practicing paid off, because several months later, he landed his first professional gig at a TCI college event at Downtime. He continued to play many parties all over the city and his popularity continued many years later.
The Name
Trigga Bashment’s name was given to him by his best friend Leighton. Because he had a hard time coming up with a name for himself, Trigga and his friends were sitting around trying to figure out what to call him. Leighton said ‘Trigga’ because his personality was like a Trigger. If someone bothers him, he basically lets them have it, and explodes. His name has nothing to do with guns or violence. ‘Bashment’ comes from the fact that Trigga always likes to dance and have fun when he is around music. So being around him is like a party, hence the last part of his name, Bashment.
The Radio
One evening at a private event (which Trigga was not scheduled to play at) he was there because he knew the people that were throwing the event. While it was still early, lots of people started showing up, but there was no music, as the DJ scheduled to play hadn’t gotten there yet. As more people came in, Trigga offered to play something until the scheduled DJ arrived. After getting the okay, Trigga went and got his laptop and started playing music. He had people on the dance floor enjoying themselves, and when the scheduled DJ got there, he was very impressed with what he saw. The night progressed, and the DJ (Banky Hype) stopped Trigga as he was leaving and asked to have a meeting with him.
The following week they met up at the radio station, and Banky offered him a radio show. He asked Trigga what type of show he wanted to do, and he mentioned that there wasn’t much foundation music on the station, especially on a Sunday, and he’d like to play that. When asked what he was going to call his show, Trigga wasn’t sure, and then, a few days later, he told Banky he wanted to call his show ‘Rock and Come in Sundays’, after a suggestion from his friend Leighton. Rock and Come in Sundays first aired in December 3, 2015, and was from 10-12am. 6 weeks later, he switched time slots to 8-10 due to the restructuring of the station.
In late 2017, he moved to Atlanta to focus more on his radio show and Deejaying full time. He is the Co-owner of Team Bashment Apparel, and Team Bashment.com, both ideas that came to life during his radio show. In 2019, the Team Bashment Brand expanded to include Team Bashment Radio, a block of programming on Mixx106radio.com that features multiple genres of Caribbean music. Trigga’s influences are Kid Capri, DJ Red Alert, Ron G., Rory (Stone Love) DJ Redds (Spectrum Disco), King Addies, and Down Beat the ruler. While Trigga enjoys all types of music, he enjoys Roots & Culture the most because of its longevity and relevance today. Dennis Brown and Alton Ellis are two of his favorites because of their voice quality and their timeless music. What sets Trigga apart from other Deejays is because of his versatility. He can play across many musical genres and can appeal to multiple crowds. He’s truly someone that entertains a crowd, and enjoys himself right along with the audience.
