"The 4th Sister" represents the underdog or outcast.

Growing up in Miami as a Hispanic American and the daughters of first generation immigrants wasn’t easy. We quickly realized that within the Hispanic sector, we were the minority. It was always a treat if we ever met other Chapines (Nickname for Guatemalan people). Our Guatemalan voices were being drowned by all the other cultures. And though we love diversity, we also felt, and still feel that Guatemalans are not being heard. So one of the best ways to bring people together and have them learn about a culture is to introduce them to their food. And that’s how The 4th Sister came to fruition.

Do you know who "The 4th Sister" represents? (Hint: They are overlooked like the 4th crop.)

Did you know that in companion planting, chili peppers can act as a deterrent for pesky pests?

¿Sabes a quién representa "The 4th Sister” o “La Cuarta Hermana"?

Can you guess what the 4th sister is in traditional Mayan Cuisine? (Hint: It heightens the flavors in food.)

Did you know that the Native Americans also follow the Three Sisters? But their fourth sister was actually a Sunflower or Sister Bee Balm (aka Bergamot, Horsemint and Oswego Tea). This sister supports the beans, lures birds from the corn with her seeds, and attracts insect pollinators.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
¿Puedes adivinar cuál es la 4ta hermana en la cocina tradicional maya? (Sugerencia: aumenta los sabores en los alimentos).
¿Sabías que los nativos americanos también siguen a las Tres Hermanas? Pero su cuarta hermana era en realidad un girasol o bálsamo de abeja hermana (también conocido como bergamota, menta de caballo y té de oswego). Esta hermana sostiene los frijoles, atrae a las aves del maíz con sus semillas y atrae a los insectos polinizadores.
