J-Bird” is a pivotal figure in the independent hip-hop scene, serving as the President of Live Events at Rhymesayers Entertainment and co-founder of the renowned Soundset Festival.

His journey began in Chicago, where he co-founded Ch’rewd Entertainment, a street marketing and promotion company while attending Columbia College. After graduation, he co-created “Caught In The Middle Magazine” in 1994, focusing on the underground hip-hop culture. During his time in Chicago, he also started Birdcage Management, an artist management and touring company.

In 2000, J-Bird relocated to Minneapolis to join Rhymesayers Entertainment working with such artists: Atmosphere, Eyedea & Abilities and MF DOOM.

At Rhymesayers, J-Bird played a crucial role in expanding the label’s influence, particularly through live events. In 2008, he co-founded the Soundset Festival, which grew into one of the largest single-day hip-hop festivals globally, attracting attendees from all 50 U.S. states and numerous countries.

In the last 25 years with Rhymesayers, J-Bird continues his passion of working with artists, releasing their music and touring the world bringing people together with the art of live entertainment.

This is THE SWEETEST OF IT ALL. My newest album with MaLLy is out now! It feels amazing to finally put this piece of work out to the world. It’s been finished for a year and we just had to have the patience to get all the pieces together to present it in a way that all of you would love it. The album is put together to give you an experience into MaLLy’s and my worlds through a cohesive 14 track collection. It might take a few spins, but once you hear it front to back a few times you start to really grasp each songs place and transition. It’s my favorite piece of work to date and that’s over 25 years in the game so it says a lot.

Colton Otte’s journey in music began with classic rock influences from his dad, evolving through his first CDs—Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park and Believe by Disturbed. As he grew, his tastes expanded to include rap icons like Eminem, Ludacris, and Outkast, with a deep dive into Minnesota’s underground rap scene during high school. Colton’s passion for music led him on tour with Prof from 2016 to 2023, capturing the artist’s rise from small venues to major stages, while also being immersed in the vibrant world of Soundset. Now 33, Colton enjoys life in the Northwoods of Minnesota with his girlfriend Sarah, where he explores the beauty of the northern lights and the Milky Way, blending his love for music with the tranquility of nature.

Somewhere in the back of a semi-truck, nuzzled between two 8ft towers of hoodie boxes, you’ll find a smaller tower - about 4ft. You’ll notice a circular moisture stain left from a water bottle that’s directly next to a Yeti Tumbler filled with iced espresso. Lastly, you’ll notice a MacBook pro and its operator, Doug Lefebvre. This is his desk, this is his element.

Doug “Merch God” Lefebvre is a 41-year-old entrepreneur living in South Minneapolis, MN. His company Level Merch was founded in 2011 and provides merchandise services to various artists and companies. He has traveled the globe several times as the merchandise liaison and vendor for the tour (known as a “road rep” in the music industry). His experience is vast, and his list of clients sounds like a short list of Coachella headliners. He is currently working with Atmosphere, Tyler, the Creator, Childish Gambino, and Kendrick Lamar. Doug has found a home in an industry that combines music and mathematics, exact sciences and events, family and function

THIS IS THE SWEETEST OF IT ALL SO SHOW ME LOVE! 4 years ago my man, partner in crime, MC, and brother MaLLy started working on some songs. This was at the beginning of the pandemic, and we just needed to do some work to keep our chops up in what was at the time a strange world. Those songs soon turned to a few good songs, and we realized we had started an album. In that time my wife got pregnant with our first kid, and she wanted to move home to New Zealand to be closer to family (we got 2 now). We had always planned on living here eventually, we just didn’t expect it to be so soon.

Once we got settled I started cranking out beat after beat to send to MaLLy in an old run down sleepout at our first house here on Waiheke Island in New Zealand. When finished I probably made over 200 beats for MaLLy and he carefully picked out the ones that really stood out to where he was at in his life and writing process.

MaLLy wrote and recorded all the songs at his house in Minneapolis, and I made and produced almost every song in that sleepout. We spent 0 hours in the same room on this album, but we’ve worked together for so long that it didn’t feel any different then the way we used to do it.

Couple sneak peaks about a few songs. Black & Gold Genetics was the first song we recorded, it’s also the demo. It was just that good that we kept it that way. Blueberry Skies was originally a different title, I suggested that title because he says it in the song, and to me the blueberry sky was the only thing we shared together when we made this album. In 2022 we were on tour for most of the year, and Show Me Love was the only song we made that year. Sometimes you only make one, and it’s a gem.
