For Louis Miller, intimate gatherings have always been the very substance of life. Growing up in New York, he thrived on experiences of close connection, precious and rare gifts in a city that could be so expansive and so isolating. From dinner parties and board game nights, to living room concerts and rooftop dance parties, he always loved those moments of clarity and solace in which the whole world seemed encapsulated in one special space with one special group of people.
Two decades before he founded Micasa, Louis began his career as a musician, drumming with bands in New York’s legendary downtown scene. But his favorite performances weren’t the ones at CBGB’s or Webster Hall. They were the ones where there was no stage, where he and the audience were united in a room together, where the energy was electric and the music was alive.
Years later, Louis was living in a beautiful old brownstone off Prospect Park, playing music and cooking meals, inviting friends and hosting gatherings. “This city is brimming with talent, so full of people eager to share their gifts,” he thought, “and there are so many uniquely warm and interesting homes and gracious hosts out there . . .” And as one circle of friends expanded out to include many others, sharing that experience of home with countless other artists, performers, cooks, and guests, Micasa was born.
