Wolfes Pond Spill Update

Photos from last night, this morning, and this afternoon.

We’re incredibly proud of our volunteers—some of the best you’ll find anywhere. Aside from a short four-hour break overnight, members of our organization have been on-site, rotating in shifts to monitor the situation, document developments, and offer assistance in any way we can—physically or informationally.

At this time, the spill is being handled by local and state agencies. We’re deeply grateful for their response and continued presence.

We ask that anyone planning to hike, ride, or visit the area, please stay clear of the affected zone.

While no official reports have been released yet, it’s just common sense: do not fish, or harvest anything from this waterway until we hear otherwise. If you or someone you know frequents this area for fishing, please spread the word.

We’ll continue to provide updates as we get them.
Thank you for your support and vigilance.

A Tough Day on the Trails – Wolfes Pond Park

Today started like any other—a great ride checking in on our local trails. But that changed quickly when we came across what we initially thought was spilled paint.

After further investigation and reporting it to the proper authorities, preliminary results indicate that the substance is possibly home heating oil.

We’re incredibly thankful we were there to spot it and report it immediately. Huge thanks to the fast response from the NYC DEP, Staten Island based US Coast Guard, DEC, NRC, and all others involved who are treating this situation with the seriousness it deserves.

While we don’t know the full procedure ,severity or scope of the cleanup, we can confirm that as of 10 PM, the spill still remains in Wolfes Pond Park.

We urge everyone to stay clear of the area, and please be aware: this is a flammable substance. Exercise extreme caution—no open flames or sparks anywhere near the site.

We will continue to stay vigilant and provide updates as we get them.

The best place to mountain bike on Staten Island is widely considered to be Wolfe’s Pond Park. Located on the south shore of the island, this park offers a variety of trails specifically designed for mountain biking, making it the only officially designated mountain biking spot in the borough. The trails range in difficulty from beginner to intermediate, with options like the White Trail (a scenic, relatively easy route) and the Red Trail (The Phoenix Trail), which stretches about 3 miles and offers a more challenging ride with rolling terrain and some technical sections. You can extend the Red Trail by riding it in reverse for a tougher 4-mile loop. The park’s northern half, above Hylan Boulevard, is where most of the mountain biking action happens, featuring a mix of singletrack and doubletrack paths through woodlands and near ponds.
Wolfe’s Pond has seen significant trail maintenance and development, thanks to efforts from groups like the Staten Island Trail Riders, with over 700 hours of trail work logged in recent years. This has kept the trails in great shape, with clear markings and a variety of features like roots and rolling hills that add to the experience without being overly extreme. It’s also beginner-friendly, with gentler options like the doubletrack in nearby Ocean Breeze Park if you’re just starting out. Parking is plentiful, and there are facilities like bathrooms, making it convenient for a day out.
While other areas like the Staten Island Greenbelt or High Rock Park have trails that some riders use unofficially, biking isn’t legally permitted there, and you risk running into hikers or park enforcement. Wolfe’s Pond stands out as the legal, well-maintained, and most popular choice for mountain biking on Staten Island. For the best experience, download a trail map from the official Wolfe’s Pond Park website or use an app like Trailforks to navigate the network.
