I met you in 1988, and boy, did we build a solid friendship. People often thought you were my biological brother. We talked frequently, but over time, we drifted apart. Still, I always knew I could call you anytime, especially in moments of distress or when I needed advice. You were always there.

You believed in me, and every time we spoke, you’d ask, “How much do you need to get to Hollywood?” You saw the potential in my plays and films, always telling others about my work, bringing attention to what I was doing.

The last time we talked, we spoke about losing our fathers and how we needed to make more time for each other. And then, in the blink of an eye, you were gone. I miss you. You were such a life-changer for me, teaching me the power of words and so much Black history. I watched you change other people’s lives too, always wanting to see others grow.

Rest in peace. You will always be missed. Today is your Earthday, but now you’re in the great beyond. Even so, I still feel your presence from time to time.

Post-Slave Trauma is Real

Our community has faced immense obstacles, and these challenges have hindered our progress. The wounds are especially pronounced when we feel powerless and abandoned. We seek both freedom and bo***ge simultaneously because these conditions were historically imposed on us. Our DNA carries these memories through the evolution process, which is why our skin tones vary; dark skin was meant to protect us from the sun, while white skin was meant to protect from the cold. Despite these differences, the common denominator is that we all have skin.

Recently, I had to turn off the TV because a political candidate spoke the word "Black" as if it were a disease. Discrimination is supposed to be a crime under Title VII laws, yet we allow the incumbent to discriminate on national television as if it were acceptable. Black people are peacemakers; we are peaceful. We had every right to storm the White House on numerous occasions, yet it was the racist Trump supporters who did so.

Black people, hold on tight to your spirituality. Forgive Kamala for her shortcomings because we forgive white people for theirs every day. I am voting for her because she has proven to be a fighter, and I respect her strength. It is not easy being a Black woman in a white man's political and social world. This is Ina Norris endorsing her, not my organization.
