Last Christmas Wreath workshop of the year! I had such a good time with these ladies! I even learned how to make a new bow so I can share that with participants next year! Another great group of ladies came out to Feed Store Beer Co. For night two of wreath workshops. I love having the little girls come. And honestly, I got a few of my ribbon options like the purple snowflake with them in mind. Thank you again to all that came out! I’ll see my last group at the Bloomfield Library in a couple weeks!

What a great first workshop! Thank you to all the ladies that came last night and shared part of you Christmas with me! This year especially, I was worn out before the workshop started, but chatting local flowers and helping people create something they love brought me back to life. This gig of flower farming can wear me out, but sharing what I grow with all of you always makes it worth it! Can’t wait to meet the group coming tonight!

Gift certificates make great gifts too! This arrangement was bought with a gift certificate this past season. The recipient decided to use hers to get some pretty flowers for her birthday dinner.

I know you’re seeing so many messages this time of year, especially to shop small for Christmas. But it is absolutely true that every sale makes a small business owner do a happy dance. I get so excited whenever an order comes through. We small business owners can’t do what we love without all of you, so thank you to everyone that made a purchase from me already this year. Dahlias are all dug AND divided! This fall weather made the task so much more enjoyable. I have dug in the cold wet before and that was no fun. Now I’ll store them all away and dream of how beautiful next year will be…while I‘m planting the last 1,000 bulbs and peony roots. Lol!

Bulbs still need planted, but the past couple of days I’ve been digging and dividing my dahlias. I’ve never divided in the fall before. I usually store them and then divide…and sometimes just replant the clump because spring is so hectic. I have to say that I think my spring self is really going to be glad I did this now. It was amazing to be digging and dividing in a tank top yesterday!

Boxes and boxes of bulbs and peony roots have been delivered here and I’m furiously trying to get things planted and dahlias lifted. This is one of the busiest times of the year for me. But I know next spring and summer that I will thank myself for all of this work. If you purchase your subscription now, you’ll be thanking me too! These three subscriptions are not available to purchase in the spring, so now is the time! They make great Christmas gifts too!

Happy Frostmas! And with that, the dahlia season…and really the season in general, is over. Thank you to everyone who bought a bouquet, arrangement, or subscription this year! I couldn’t do this thing I love without you all!

My greenhouse is one of my absolute favorite places (except June-August when it’s hotter than a volcano)! I’ve been busy today—taking last minute cuttings to propagate, lifting tender plants like my scented geraniums, and I lifted one of each variety of my heirloom mums.

Mums are perennial in our zone, but I wanted to do two things: 1) these varieties here haven’t bloomed yet and I want to make sure I get to see them! 2) I want to take cuttings in late winter to create new plants for next year and they will need to be “awake” to do that so keeping them warmer is a must.

Other plants including the mums still in the field got covered in frost cloth or leaves. It’s all a lot of work, but come spring it will all have been worth it!

It’s hard to imagine with all this warm weather we’ve had that soon it’ll be cold and dreary. We’ll be wishing for the warmer days and flowers. This has been the absolute best year I’ve had with dahlias. I’m finally making strides in growing this crop. I will not be taking custom orders this week as I save blooms for wedding buckets this weekend, but if you are wanting an arrangement or bouquet with dahlias, get with me ASAP. Even without frost, they are really slowing down….as is everything else.

Also, provided I can store the tubers well again this winter and divide several, I’m excited to consider offering a dahlia subscription next year. It would start in September and only be for a few weeks. However, this won’t be available to purchase until spring so I can make sure that we end up with enough plants in the ground. If you purchase(d) a Bouquet Booster or Arrangement Ally, you *should* have some of the early bloomers in your subscriptions already.

If we labeled flower arrangements like we label artworks this would be titled “Deadheading Dahlias.” I have a hard time letting flowers just go to waste…so even though many were past their prime harvest stage and this only looked great for a couple days on my dining table, it’s always fun and therapeutic to create.

I love getting to make big statement pieces like these urns that I got to make for my church this weekend. I was fortunate enough to have some Cafe au Lait dahlias ready and was able to put to use some amaranth that got way to big for any sort of normal bouquet. And if you look real close, you’ll see that the branches have acorns still attached. I think it’s the little details, even in something this big, that make an arrangement special.
