A lesson in Scale! https://thehouseplantguru.com/2018/01/09/scale-insects-and-how-to-control-them-on-your-houseplants/

I can't get out into the garden yet to photograph the insects you all love so much but luckily for you, I am terrible at caring for my houseplants so I have a beautiful example of scale for you to observe. 😂
I've struggled with this plant for over 5 years now. It gets this all the time and no matter what I do it comes back. I'm sure some of you can relate.
However, I let it go extra long this time so it is a mess for sure! These harmless looking little things cause quite the mess. It will affect the leaves if I let it go too long but other than the sticky sap that gets everywhere it doesn't appear to affect the growth, as you can see it has a new sprout coming out. It will stay good for a while after cleaning it off for a few weeks and I will think I finally have it.....but I don't. The good thing is, it hasn't moved to any of my other 75 plants so I don't worry too much about it but I am fascinated by the havoc a little insect can cause. Does anyone have any tips for me to cure this once and for all?

But seeing these seedlings popping up brings me the greatest joy! I think these look like little feet!
It will all get done. Happy growing friends!

I have taken classes, listened to countless speakers, read books and asked every garden friend I know how to successfully store dahlia tubers because I lose most of them every year no matter what I do. Well, this is how I stored my dahlias this time. Unintentionally of course as time just got away from me. They are still in the dirt I dug them up in and they have just been sitting here in the garage all winter like this. No special treatment, no wrapping, no insulating, just kept between 40/50 degrees. They are fine! Slacking seemed to work for once! I wish it always worked out this way.

Hummingbird fans rejoice! The ruby-throated hummingbirds are on their way back to the eastern US after spending the winter in Mexico and South America.

ALERT: Your yard cleanup could wipe out an entire generation of native pollinators! 🐝

SHOCKING FACTS:
- 80% of native bees nest in dead plant stems
- One stem can house up to 20 pollinator larvae
- Early cleanup destroys 6 months of bee development
- Native bees are worth $2000 per yard in pollination

What's Really Living in Your "Messy" Yard:

1. Hidden Residents:
- Mason bee cocoons
- Leafcutter bee nests
- Native wasp larvae
- Beneficial predator eggs

2. Critical Areas to Protect:
🌿 Hollow plant stems
🍂 Leaf litter piles
🌱 Standing perennials
🌸 Seed heads

3. How to Help:
- Wait until May to clean up
- Leave 15" stem heights
- Create brush piles
- Mark pollinator areas

YOUR ACTION PLAN:
✅ Stop all cleanup until 50°F consistent temps
✅ Bundle and store cut stems
✅ Create "pollinator corners"
✅ Educate your neighbors

REMEMBER:
A messy yard is a thriving ecosystem!

This past weekend was my last wedding for the season. As always, I didn't get the best pics!

Congratulations Josh and Molly!
It was the perfect day and the venue is absolutely gorgeous. It was decorated perfectly for a story book wedding. Best of luck to the happy couple!

It's a sad day for the garden. The frost has hit my dahlias and marks the end of the season. It truly has been an amazing journey this year and I look forward to next season. We have a lot of cool stuff planned and we will have an even better selection for the U-Pick. I hope to see you all then!

Well the U Pick went great yesterday for the first hour until the rain started. Some people even came in their raincoat and boots to cut but it just never stopped. We sure needed it though. Thank you to everyone who came out!
Hopefully we will be able to fit at least one more U Pick day in this season.
We will be open regular U-Pick hours next year and we will also be offering educational gardening workshops, small weddings or elopements, garden parties and more. Looking forward to the seasons to come!

I have loads of sunflowers available if anyone would like to pick some up. $1 each! Most of them are perfect bouquet size. Not too huge.
