Another box of goodies from and while nothing beats harvesting blooms you grew and making art to help others show their love…. Having super fresh stems delivered to my front porch, overnight, from Miami is a close second. It’s a pretty hot button topic, and the weight of the carbon footprint imported blooms carry is not lost on me. I had to choose to either shut down for 6 months out of the year, or make some compromises and keep Orcas Island blooming. Not much beats sharing flowers. I’m grateful for good vendors, and good clients that make it worth it.

It’s dark, a lot.
I am so grateful for little shoots, and tiny roots. I learned a new word the other day. Husbandry. I am grateful for husbandry too.

remember those times I said i was in denial about the passing of summer and end of ? Ya. That’s over. Tuber hunting after dark is a whole new form of “dedication” I’ve not yet experienced this level of commitment to a dream. Life is weird. I like it.

I keep saying “last of the blooms for 2023” This one really is. And it probably won’t last more than a day or so. Tomorrow I get a box of wholesale flowers and make the official shift from petal hill grown to imported. It’s a tough transition, but necessary to keep clients smiling and blooming all winter long. Plus! I get to play with fancy stuff like brunia and crazy roses. Flowers every day for the rest of this life. 🤍🌸🤍

I didn’t know it was possible to grieve over flowers. But here we are. Harvesting what I’d hoped would make seed pods, pinching the last little green bits from the lower nodes. Wishing I’d taken more pictures, made more bouquets, gave more away.
There never seems to be enough time. Time to finish, time to start, time to be here, right now. My head is already telling me what I’ll do differently next year, where to improve. Pining for the ones that didn’t bloom, wondering what those last mysteries were.
In a few weeks time, after all the tubers are tucked away, I’ll be able to see how gorgeous it all was, how lucky I am that my life is full of flowers every single day. I’ll feel accomplished, and wiser. I’ll be grateful I got to work the soil with bare hands, haul, dig, saunter & dream.
But just for today I’ll feel a bit sad to say goodbye.

Dahlia growers love to wow with photos of the rare and Uber rare cultivars in our collections. But I do love solid, prolific, attainable dahlias as well. Valley Tawny is all things good and a bloom that has a spot reserved in my rows for the remainder of my dahlia seasons.

Today was noticeably chilly. The dahlias have slowed down rapidly. I can’t combat the hundreds of snail babies now gorging on dewy foliage. The end of season is looming. There are still quite a few that haven’t bloomed. Some are so close! Is there any way to speed up their bloom? Or warm them up enough so they can bloom? I probably just have to accept reality….

This Bloomquist Sue is one of my first successful cuttings, grown from an unrooted pinch sent by a friend in late spring. It’s pretty incredible that just a few inches of stem can grow into a strong healthy plant. I am loving the lacinated petals and rich marmalade hues. Such a little darling.

Some of my favorite dahlias are the deep red, and burgundy blooms. I have very few though! This Fidalgo Blacky is darling, makes me want towns of moody tones. What is your favorite dark dahlia?

have stolen my heart. Memory was one of my first cuttings this spring. Purchased from . Id not grown from cuttings before, or attempted to keep once alive indoors. Thankfully the dahlia community is packed with knowledgeable growers that are willing to teach. And thankfully dahlias are resilient.

First there was one KA’S Blood Orange. My First ever, and my first cutting. I pinched a little here, a little there and made a few cuttings. There were trades, and a few mislabeled babies. As the dahlia season rolled on I found myself with another KA’s Blood Orange, and another until there were 5. Last week one of the final mystery dahlias bloomed. Guess who? 6! 6 KA’s Blood Orange. I’m tickled pink… er, Orange.

Dahlia season is winding down, not sure i remember what life looks like without them. I’ll spend winter months sponging up as much education as this aging mind can, and of course scouring the internet for new varieties to put on the wishlist.

the sun feels further away again today. thankfully there is enough warmth for the dahlias to keep blooming just a bit longer. Maybe even long enough for me to get all of them identified, labeled & documented. Fingers crossed.

Sometimes i forget that I have a life full of flowers at nearly every moment. I forget how lucky that makes me. I was just driving another bouquet to another loved one being celebrated. I glanced over to see the most perfect vignette of color and texture. Gods bounty strapped into my passenger seat. That’s a pretty great road dog….

I struggle with saying goodbye to summer. Every year without fail I throw myself into the sunshine, I revel in the longer days, happily half naked and barefoot. Every year without fail I seem to forget that summer doesn’t last forever. I’m not ready for fall. But… that soft yellowing of leaves, and the color story it tells helps.
