This high quality, community-friendly event is sponsored by the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce. In the past it has attracted over 150,000 people every year from throughout California and the West Coast. The festival-now celebrating its thirty-ninth year-takes place on tree-lined University Avenue in beautiful downtown Palo Alto, a vital economic area 35 miles south of San Francisco. The backbone of
the festival and the key to its success are the three hundred fine artists and crafters whose display booths are placed back-to-back along University Avenue. These exhibitors are the reason why this festival attracts such a high percentage of fine artists and crafters whose work you'll see only at a few select shows on the West Coast. Always a crowd-pleaser, the Italian Street Painting Expo will again offer one full block of chalk artists creating larger-than-life works of art all weekend long on Tasso Street. This year's co-beneficiaries of the Italian Street Painting Expo are Palo Alto's Youth Community Services & Ada's Cafe. Local participation is high at this event. The Palo Alto Parents & Professionals for Art are the organizers and the beneficiary of the kids' art & crafts area called the Kids' Art Studio. Also, the Kiwanis of Palo Alto will again manage and serve the micro-brews and fine wines that can be found throughout the festival. For those driving to the festival, free parking is within a block or two of the festival site, but festival attendees are encouraged to use public transit or ride a bike. For transit information: 511.org. If you are a dog owner thinking about bringing "Fido" to the festival, please reconsider. The Palo Alto Festival of the Arts will offer non-stop live music on multiple stages from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 26-27, 2023.
The main stage on Waverley at University is presented by Sutter Health Palo Alto Medical Foundation. The Waverley musical lineup includes: folk rock by Michael Barrett; memorable covers by First Call Trio; violinist and fiddler Tom Rigney and John R. Burr; and blues and country by The Cook ‘n Fenny Combo.
The Webster Stage, at University and Webster is presented by California Coast Music Camp and will include a variety of musical genres. Performers include: the progressive folk rock of Katalysst; the acoustic pop, rock, R&B and jazz of B Street Express; blues, rock, jazz, and country by According to Bazooka; ukulele by Melissa Dinwiddie; and folk singer Steve Kritzer.
There will also be continuous street corner concerts at University at Cowper, and University at Emerson. Norm Kahan plays a variety of instruments in soft rock, classics, country, ballads and Broadway tunes. South Bay Swindlers wows crowds with jazz and blues.

We are honored to have world renowned chalk artist Rod Tryon as our Featured Artist in the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts Italian Street Painting Expo. Rod has been street painting for 36 years. He visited the first street painting festival in the United States, I Madonnari Street Painting Festival in Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1986, and knew it was something he had to do. Rod creates street paintings for special events worldwide.
He’s often asked if it is difficult to deal with the fact that his work is so temporary. “The act of creating the painting is as significant as the finished piece,” he said. “The ephemeral nature of the art form only makes it more special for the artist and unique for the audience. It is a gift to those who get to experience the artwork being created. Interacting with onlookers, discussing the image and answering questions about the piece is a large part of the joy of the creation.”

The word “canvas”—as the public knows it—takes on a whole new meaning if you're a street painter. In fact, this art form—using only chalk pastels—is traditionally very fleeting. Hours and hours are spent creating these works of art; only to have them washed away in a single hour, as if they had never been. The Italian Street Painting Expo, presented by the Palo Alto Weekly, gives the opportunity for two local non-profits to raise much-needed funds to implement community service programs. Monies raised from the Kids Chalk-a-Lot area (toward the end of Tasso) will benefit Youth Community Service; and monies raised from sponsored artists’ street paintings will benefit Ada’s Cafe. Be sure to stop by and help support both worthy organizations. This year’s Featured Artist: Ever Galvez is classically trained in painting, drawing, conceptual art, sculpture and traditional animation. Galvez, an award-winning chalk painter, is also a fine artist with more than 15-years’ experience. Festival weekend, he will be bringing his talents from Southern California to create an enormous 200 square-foot 3D image at the corner of Tasso & University. His visual imagery, always a crowd-pleaser, will be sure to bring enjoyment & lasting memories to all observers. Don't miss this temporary art exhibit at "ground level" where a burst of color, design, and awe-inspiring paintings are brought to life in chalk. I voice my stories by painting on canvases and by captured images using my camera. My inspiration comes from the world around me as well as the world inside my head. As a self-taught artist from a young age, I've experimented with a vast array of styles, techniques, and materials to create original art. Fulfill Your Dreams…Play Me! Join the millions of “wanna-be” to professional pianists nation-wide who couldn’t resist sitting down at a “Play Me” piano and filling the air with melodious music. Look for Chopin & Chandeliers' interactive “Play Me” piano located on the plaza—corner of University and Tasso. Surrounded by colorful and whimsical chandeliers, made from recycled plastic bottles, you can’t miss it. These are not your typical chandeliers as seen in many homes or lavish atriums. Instead, these decorative chandeliers are better known as the art of up-cycling. The process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful. Presented by Stanford Medicine, festival attendees will be mesmerized by these up-cycled plastic bottles re-created into vibrantly-colored "Chihuly-like" sculptures. A chance to perform on the tree-shaded outdoor piano will be an unexpected and joyful experience. Who knows who will sit down at the keys? Who knows who will stop to listen? On August 22-23, the celebrated fine art festival known as the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts returns to beautiful downtown Palo Alto on University Avenue from 10am-6pm. A stunning showcase of art is displayed across all mediums with 300 talented contemporary artists from all over the country and the Bay Area. Many unique and one-of-a-kind art pieces are available for the perfect souvenir for your home, business, and art collectors alike.
Festivalgoers will have the opportunity to become immersed in some exceptional artistry while strolling through the event. Don’t miss the Italian Street Painting Expo where “paintings” made from chalk pastels are created at ground level – on the pavement, live musical performances on two stages and street corner concerts, performing and interactive exhibits, Free - Kids’ Art Studio, and emerging high school artists.
