On this Small Business Saturday, here's a gentle reminder to use this holiday season to both support your local community and our big beautiful planet. Carefully considering your holiday purchases could be one of the most environmentally impactful actions you take all year!
After each holiday season here in the States, it's estimated that some 5 billion pounds of returned gifts end up in landfills! 5 Billion!! When you return a gift to a big box store, there's a 50-50 chance it will not be restocked/resold, but rather will go immediately in the dumpster. All this well-intentioned-gifting-turned-trash typically gets dumped near disparaged, impoverished communities, some as far away as Africa. This post-consumer waste does not even begin to encapsulate the fossil fuels, chemicals and packaging used to make and ship global products to store shelves in the first place.
When you purchase a zero-waste gift from a local small business, you break this not-so-merry-cycle. What is a zero-waste gift? First, no plastic or synthetics are involved. If it is a manufactured gift, like a toy, it's made of all-natural materials. Zero-waste gifts are often experience-based or something that can be consumed or composted, like food and flowers.
Speaking of experienced-based gifts, did you know studies show that such gifts are far more appreciated and created a greater sense of happiness and fulfillment than a "product" gift. Here at Love 'n Fresh, we have three really outstanding zero-waste, experienced-based gift options for those on your list who either already love flowers and gardening or who are ready to give either a try.
Our online shop is now open for holiday ordering. Check out our 2025 Flower Subscription, our curated "Cutting Garden in a Box", and/or our new Workshop Season Pass. Each dollar spent with our regenerative flower farm is immediately used to support healing the earth and nurturing our hyper-local community here in Philly.
Nothing we produce or sell ends up in landfills. 🌿🌎
