Are you looking for a trauma-informed psychologist?

If you have experienced trauma and have been diagnosed with PTSD, depression, anxiety or other mental health issues, it’s important to find a therapist who is knowledgeable about trauma. Some therapists may have heard of it, but not all are trained in trauma-informed treatment. A therapist who specializes in trauma will know what to look for when treating survivors.

What is a trauma-informed therapist?

A trauma-informed therapist has a deep understanding of the effects of trauma on the brain and body. They understand that stress reactions and dissociation are normal responses to traumatic events, and they know how to help their clients learn to regulate these reactions so they can feel safe again. A good therapist will also be aware of how different types of therapy work best with people who have experienced trauma.

How do I find a good one?

Ask for referrals.

Ask your doctor, family and friends for recommendations. If possible, contact some of these people first and ask about their experiences with the therapist. If they had a good experience, ask them how long they worked with this person and how often they saw them. Also ask if they would recommend this person to others in your situation.

Look online.

There are many websites that list therapists who specialize in treating trauma, such as Psych Central and Psychology Today. You can also search by city or state on Google or Yahoo! Local to find therapists near you who specialize in treating trauma-related issues.
