Hello again!

You may or may not be aware of the fact that the Music Beacon House Concert Series is on hiatus. We saw a large drop in audience response and it wasn't lucrative enough for the artists to make the trek to Pittsburgh. We cancelled our last scheduled show of 2022 and haven't booked anyone else.

So when Jack Grace called me to see what we had planned this spring, I told him that we weren't hosting shows in 2023 and possibly 2024. He said that is cool with him. He just wants to come hang with us in Pittsburgh for the weekend. If we can get a few folks to show up for a show, so much the better.

So that's what we're doing. Call it a tentative dipping of the the toe back into the water to see if we are able to restart the series.

Now to tell you about Jack Grace...

Sometimes I find I need to inject some Jack Grace into my life. I have small personal Jack Grace concerts by playing his albums one after another. And it's great. But nothing recorded can really capture his performing live. There's something about his intensity, and his great stories, and his sense of humor and, of course, the amazing songs and musicianship that can only be experienced fully in-person.

Jack Grace was born to entertain. He is one of the most dynamic, diverse, energetic, fun, heartbreaking, crazy, poignant showmen I have had the pleasure to see. Rich and I used to plan our trips to NYC around his performance schedule. His band, The Jack Grace Band, is the only full band (with drums!) we have hosted at our house. This show will be more laid back with just Jack and his guitar, but will certainly be just as engrossing.

For a taste of what to expect of Jack Grace check out the video he made for his song "Chinatown" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wlb5Q-qBilw. It is just Jack being Jack - funny, fun and playing good music. Or check out this one for his song "Broken Melody" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWFqLND_HdE&t=10s.

So I hope you will join us again (or for the first time) for what is sure to be a great show. Don't forget to RSVP to MusicBeaconPgh (at) gmail.com.

Remember when we thought this whole pandemic thing was only going to shut down the world for 2 weeks? And we thought that was a long time? That was the last time I sent out an announcement for a Rod Picott show - on March 2, 2020 to be exact. And the show was scheduled for April 4. And we really thought it would happen. How little we knew... So let's just say there's some built-up demand for Rod to return to Music Beacon.

Well, happily some things never change. Rod Picott is still the creating beautiful, heart-wrenching and memorable music. He's once again bringing his "circus of misery and heartbreak" (his words not mine) in support of his 14th album - Paper Hearts and Broken Arrows. It's like the other Rod Picott albums - moving and sad in the best way. The songs stay with you and fill the empty spaces of your subconscious. But it also more than that. Rod continues to grow as a writer and performer on each album. And he's got it down to a science now. It's almost as good as experiencing Rod perform them in front of you live. If you have been to one of Rod's shows then you know what I am talking about. If not, you really should come. You won't regret it.

But Rod does more than music - he has published three excellent books - one of short stories and two of poetry. His stories may be brief, but they linger in the memory. His prose is as devastating as his songs are melodic. And he wrote my most-recent favorite poem. You'll also want to explore these while he's here.

Check out more about Rod and his works here: http://rodpicott.com/

Rod's shows have been known to sell out quickly, so get your RSVP in ASAP!

Angela Easterling creates the kind of music that people think of when they first hear the term "Americana." The word conjures up a traditional, possibly country-tinged, folksy and folky sound. And she has that - in spades.

What that term doesn't make clear about Angela Easterling's music is the powerful imagery and stories that she conveys in every song. Whether it's a tale of a family or a black GI returning to the South after WWII, she has a way of bringing the characters to life and touching your soul. Her sweet soprano makes the difficult events described sound beautiful, even when they are absolutely not. The songs are poignant and current, but also timeless - other elements of fine "Americana" music.

Where she finds the time to craft such beautiful songs with three young boys and a farm, I can't imagine. But she does and we are better off for it. And you'll thank yourself for coming to hear her.
