Did you get one of our Cut Garden In-A-Box this year & are wondering what to do now that the flowers are done for the season? 🌱 My best advice - leave the plants in! Since we are growing in our fields for cut flower production its not always feasible for us to leave plants in, but I try to leave our late fall field in for as long as possible and will even leave my own personal garden untouched until spring. I do this for a few different reasons:

🌿 It keeps roots in the soil = healthier soil, happy soil microbiome = better plants next year
🐦 It provides a food source for native birds - we LOVE our golden finches & house wrens here on the farm, and they love to hang out in the unruly late-fall gardens and eat thistle off of the spent seed heads
🌸 Most summer annuals will readily self-seed. Celosia, zinnias, cosmos & gomphrena sprout up all over the place for us, so leave those seed heads on!

The one exception to the rule? Make sure to cut down your peonies all the way to the ground. These are notorious for harboring botrytis and its best to remove their foliage in the fall.

Once you do cut your plants down make sure to add some compost to degrade over the winter and get a jumpstart on your soil for your spring garden! 🌼
