Today, we are thinking about freedom — the freedom to think, to speak, to express, and to create.

On our nation’s day of independence, let’s also remember that true freedom includes the freedom to imagine.

The arts in education empower students to explore ideas, voice their perspectives, and grow into innovative, empathetic citizens. Just as our democracy depends on open expression, our classrooms must make space for creativity.

This Independence Day, let’s commit to defending not only our rights, but the right of every child to access a full and inspiring education — one that includes the arts.

Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸

The visual and performing arts are just as natural to young children as speaking and playing. Through the arts, kids strengthen problem-solving and critical thinking skills while also growing in language, math, and social development.

Every artistic experience opens the door to creativity, connection, and lifelong learning!

What is Process Art? And Why Does It Matter in Schools?

In a world that often focuses on perfect results, process art reminds us that the journey is just as important—if not more—than the final destination.

Process art is all about exploration, creativity, and personal expression. There are no step-by-step instructions, no right or wrong outcomes, and no pressure to make something that looks a certain way. Instead, students are invited to:

🖍 Experiment with materials
🎨 Make choices based on their interests
🧠 Solve problems and think critically
💬 Express their emotions and ideas

Unlike product-focused art—which emphasizes a specific end result—process-focused art nurtures imagination, builds confidence, and supports individual growth.

When schools make room for process art, they are saying:
➡ “We value your ideas.”
➡ “Your voice matters.”
➡ “Learning is about discovery, not perfection.”

Let’s shift the spotlight from perfect final expectations to the powerful process of creating art when it comes to art education.

Why the Arts Matter: A Brain-Based Perspective

Check out this amazing visual that highlights how different parts of the brain help us think, feel, move, speak, and more! Recent brain research continues to show what arts educators have long known: engaging in the arts lights up the whole brain.

Creating VISUAL ART activates the occipital lobe (vision), temporal lobe (emotions and learning), and even the frontal lobe (problem-solving and planning).

DRAMA and STORYTELLING stimulate the frontal and temporal lobes for speaking, memory, and emotional processing.

MUSIC supports learning and coordination by engaging both hemispheres of the brain, boosting the cerebellum (coordination), brain stem (rhythmic regulation), and memory centers.

DANCE involves the cerebellum and frontal lobe, blending balance, movement, and creative expression.

Incorporating arts into education isn’t just about creativity—it’s essential for developing well-rounded, neurologically healthy learners.

Honoring Juneteenth Through Art & Education

On this day of remembrance and liberation, we honor Juneteenth by celebrating the power of art to tell stories, preserve culture, and inspire change.

Looking for an art activity for kids to celebrate Juneteenth? Here's a great resource!

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States… and it’s coming up later this week on June 19th!
