In honor of Women's Day, we are happy to share a 1973 episode of Homemade TV from the Portable Channel Collection at VSW.

Produced by Portable Channel and Women's Television Workshop for WXXI's series "Catch 21". "Women on Women" is an episode exploring media literacy for women and opportunities for using video and open media to replace commercial and stereotyped images of women. We were lucky to have the world-famous Dwight Cody and his assistant Ina of The Boston Connection at VSW for 2 days to get our recently donated Steenbeck flatbed fully serviced. VSW now has two Steenbecks for researchers and students to use when viewing 16mm films from our collection.

Today we remember the Attica Prison Rebellion of 1971 with a playlist of early video from the Portable Channel Collection. Many of these tapes, which were recently digitized by VSW, have not been seen for nearly 50 years.

Please take your time with these videos, and be aware that some have scenes of graphic violence.

Our deepest thanks go out to Sanford Rockowitz and his colleagues who produced these tapes.

Beyond the Mountains, More Mountains: Haiti Disaster Relief Fundraiser on VSW.ORG

“Beyond the Mountains, More Mountains” is a traditional Haitian expression, and world-view. In 1975 Philip Mallory Jones and Gunilla Mallory Jones joined Fred Mangones in his native Haiti for a journey around the island and into the culture, history and ethos its people. Beyond the Mountains, More Mountains weaves verite analogue video, photography, and video post-production in a tapestry of visual impressions, music and voices. It was also part of a multi-media gallery installation at Ithaca Video Projects.
