Latest routine from “Juggling Man Jr.”! I am so excited about this! I am not pushing this with him at all, he’s pushing himself and loves it like me!

Family talent show for Rockford Summer celebration today at the Rotary pavilion between 1:30 and 3:30. Found out about it just a few days ago. The kiddos are going to perform with me. The girls will be rocking some gymnastics and Aiden and I will be juggling. We are excited that the kids enjoy getting in front of a crowd.

How Juggling became part of my life part #2:

somewhere after FKB performance at FSU, I attended a the National Scout Jamboree in Fort AP Virginia (I was VERY fortunate to be involved in Scouting — great times, great relationships, and great tools I would use later in life when I needed to recover), there was a guy named Steve Floor at the Shakedown (planning event) was juggling. This was 3 weeks before the actual trip. By the time the trip happened, I could juggle 3 balls — racquet balls I think — they bounced EVERYWHERE as I was learning. I was told to juggle on the edge of a cliff if I didn’t want to run forward after them—never took that advice. myself, along with one other guy from my Boy Scout troop (Travis Roy) that went along learned to juggle before we left too. For three weeks, anytime we had spare time (waiting in line, before and after meals, in the hotel, etc) we juggled.

I also remember going to the old post office in Washington DC on this trip. There was a spot where I visited my first actual juggling store. The guy that I owned it actually lived on the streets from the time he was 8 or 9 and supported himself by street performing. Crazy! That was hard to imagine being an old farm boy myself.

The fire continued to build and I am pretty sure that is when I formed one of my first, but not my last, addictions. I think I loved it so much for many reasons.

The First reason, it felt good and it came naturally (I would later convert my personal religion to “moreman”, you know, anything that made me feel different, feel better, I wanted “more” “man”) .

Second reason, I remember getting a lot of positive feedback from friends and family. This was huge for me.

Third reason, it was a sport and it was fun.

Fourth reason, it gave me something positive to focus on, something to look forward too, and you can never really stop learning new tricks because the possibilities are endless.

Fifth reason, I liked that it was different and not many people did it. That really was a big hitter for me. Maybe unique was the right word.

Once I got back from my trip and never really stopped and the itch never went away. My brother Jason Proefrock remembered going to bed at night to “thump”….”thump thump”. That was me “before” I started winning more often against gravity in the room next door.

I saved my money and bought more juggling equipment — clubs! I remember waiting for them for so long. Before I was able to get them, I bought real bowling pins from a flea market to learn with for 25 cents each. I still have them today and they weigh about 4.5 pounds per pin.

How juggling became part of my life part #1: years ago, I was living in the darkness, yet didn’t know I was there. Life didn’t make a lot of sense, I was silently nearly failing out of most classes in high school and I had no idea what to do — had lots of things I wasn’t supposed to do, but felt lost, insecure, and confused on the inside. Outside, I was happy go lucky, never showed anger, rage, and anything that would make me or others uncomfortable. There seemed to be a family path for me to follow which included religion, scouts, shooting sports, hunting, and the like. The year was 1996 or 1997, and I had been playing around with the yo-yo, juggling no sticks, etc and then the day came where’s parents, due to trouble at school, kept me back from a band trip to Canada — I think my mom felt horrible for not letting me go, but they did what they thought best and I can respect that especially that I am a parent now. She ended up bringing me to a Flying Karamazov Brothers show at Ferris State University. That was the spark which later ignited a fire in me which would NEVER be extinguished.

[…] Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit. And you’re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls – family, health, friends and spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life. —Bryan Dyson, former CEO of Coca Cola.

It’s really amazing to me the amount of trust people have in jugglers. When I light stuff on fire or throw knives in the air, most people are like “It’s okay, he’s a professional”. I usually look around because I think they must be talking about someone else. It’s like they think I possess something magical that makes it okay. What are your thoughts???
