I often hear expressions like “live is the present” especially within the spiritual community, as if this is obviously the ideal way to live. However, if we take this literally, what does this mean? is it really possible to live fully in the moment? Does this mean to forget the past, have no ambitions or plans for the future? If this is what it means it feels rather irresponsible to me and pretty near impossible.
Personally I don’t believe “living in the present” actually means having no plans, awareness or thoughts about the past or future. The take away for me of this philosophy is that it’s important not to miss out on the beauty of now by dwelling on regrets from the past or over focusing on worries about the future.
If we have trauma and resentments we are carrying around with us from the past, finding ways to release them and forgive those who have treated us wrong is extremely freeing. However this doesn’t mean that we have forgotten the past. Hopefully we have learned and experienced useful things, some that we may cherish and others we may want to remember so we can make better choices moving forward.
Yet… Everyday (I believe) we are better off if we continue to do things that bring us back to being fully into this moment. Perhaps it’s meditation, a walk out in nature or maybe it’s doing something that challenges us and makes us feel alive. Let’s do more than simply going through the motions. Let’s pay attention to the present and allow ourselves to be in a state of love, joy and gratitude.
If we have a partner, family members and dear friends, when we get together I believe we should strive to be authentically present with them. Put down our cell phones, turn off any distractions, and spend some quality time with them talking or creating shared experiences. Look those we love in the eyes, and tell them how we feel often. If there are things we have always wanted to do, we should do them today or at least as soon as possible… Procrastination is not our friend when it comes to living a full life.
Life is short and very precious. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. We might continue to live for a very long time, or we could be gone in an instant. All we know for sure is that we are here in this moment. We can remember the past and plan for the future, but let’s also strive to prevent the things that are not present in our lives today from distracting us from making the most of now!

To my valued friends and loved ones, I love and appreciate you. I cherish the memories we’ve made together… but I’m not done yet. Let’s not simply leave it there. Let’s make time for what’s important, make time for those we love and connect in the present. 💕
