Hey everyone! Daniel here. Check out this pancake art rendition I made of Hokusai's iconic block print, "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa", during last Saturday's Metal Brunch at Eat Crow !

Lately I have been pushing myself to a higher standard for my live event pancakes. There was a time when I would create a distinction between "live event" pancakes and "studio" pancakes -- essentially, two distinct styles I would employ to emphasize speed during live events and quality when making content. Since founding this company with Wella, though, we've decided to take a different approach and have poured a ton of focused effort into serving Studio-Quality pancake art to patrons and guests that meet us for live events!

This means that sometimes I go a little slower than I used to, but the pancakes I serve are elevated from being a simple novelty to being a head-turning, mind-blowing work of art that regularly elicits cheers and applause from spectators. It is SO much more gratifying to work this way and to build a business (and client expectations) around this. We get a LOT more orders for custom preserved pieces now, our videos do much better, and we enjoy our work immensely (which translates into better and more authentic client interactions).

If you're interested in hiring us for a high-volume private event, don't fret; we have a few secret weapons that enable us to rock out pancake art designs twice as fast as what I once considered acceptable. We are fast, exceptional and kindhearted entertainers put on this earth to spread Joy through the wonder of Pancake Art, and we would adore the chance to bring this joy to your next party, special event, conference, concert or engagement.

If you happen to live in the St. Louis area, you’ll be able to pick up a copy of this week’s Riverfront Times — and you may recognize my clever mug gracing the cover!!

The article (written by Kasey Noss over the course of the last 6 months or so) is really wonderful. I feel she did a great job of presenting some of the conflict I went through in the last few years, the complexities of my old friendships and relationships, and showed me as a full, flawed human being and not a caricature.

I’m incredibly grateful to have been given an opportunity to have this part of my story told in such a widely circulated publication here in my beloved hometown. I’m also very grateful to the art director of the magazine, Evan Sult, for giving me the opportunity to not only appear ON the cover but also have the image be of my own artistic work! The reference image was from the fabulous photo set I received working with Emily H. Moore (a legend of artistic portraiture in the city) and I was able to render it so accurately thanks in large part to the grid etched into my griddle by Peat "Eyez" Wollaeger (another local legend) and arranged by my beautiful and brilliant partner Wella Kelly.

I am so happy about this for so many reasons. It’s the first time I’ve been on the cover of a magazine; the first time my art has been on the cover of a magazine; and the article didn’t just focus on me as a pancake artist but gives considerable attention to my card game and music brand, Anthromancer. It also did a wonderful job of articulating the love that, while sometimes strained, still exists between me and my business partner, Hank.

I’ve never felt so much like I’m firing on all cylinders. Everything happens for a reason. Keep the faith; you’re right where you need to be.

Wella and I will be taking the rest of the week off from streaming (except for a special one tomorrow morning), and changing our streaming schedule starting next week. We're only going to stream on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 11am (instead of M-F @ 9am). This is a significant reduction in streaming time - our plan is to use our energy more efficiently on those off days to prepare and to make sure that those two days we're streaming really interesting or exciting stuff being made.

The last weekend really took a lot out of me, and this weekend will be no different. It's hard to know how not to spread yourself thin when you're trying to build something. Between streaming, set up and breakdown, multiple weekly events and our fledgling preservation business, my mental health has been suffering and a lot of important things (rest, going to the gym, diet) have started falling to the wayside. We had a long discussion this morning and have changed our weekly schedule to afford us more time to rest, to reconnect with each other, and to capture the value we're producing in the most efficient manner.

It's a learning process!

Anyway, I'm really excited about this week. Tomorrow a big story about my art and my other business, Anthromancer, is being featured in this week's Riverfront Times. Tomorrow night I'll be performing at Queertown Underground at The Royale; Thursday night I'll be performing at Pop's Blue Moon for 4/20; Friday night I'll be doing Anthromancer Dragonfruit readings at Craft Alliance on Delmar; and then all day Saturday Wella and I will be performing with The Joy of Pancakes for Loop 420 Fest!

Doing the morning stream with all this other stuff going on was gonna be DAUNTING. So we're gonna scale back, regroup, and make sure that we're able to truly bring our JOY for pancake art to the forefront.

Wella and I made this collaboration live on our morning stream today. I’m so proud of it!! We’re both inspired by the courage and class of American icon Dolly Parton, and we hope she sees this pancake art tribute. Vegas Vipers are the Legends true?

We were told that Vegas Vipers fans p**p standing up, so we made a pancake celebrating this strange cultural practice. It's alright that the Battlehawks won today, because the Vegas Vipers are such good sports!
