Attention parents who love pictures, who cherish great smiles, who “just want ONE good photo!!”

Please keep the love of photos alive with your children. Don't force them. Don't yell. Don't ruin this gorgeous moment.

Celebrate the season of life that they are in.

Too often, I work with adults who dislike being in front of the camera. They can’t look at me straight on. They fidget. They’re uncomfortable. Every single time, the reason is *ALWAYS* “My parents were really strict about photos.” "My mom forced us to do photos so much when we were young." It makes me so sad as a family photographer to hear that some of my favorite people, as little ones, were made to feel so poorly about being themselves for the scrapbooks. And if this is you, I am so proud of you that you trusted me to start breaking that cycle.

I do my best to create an environment where we can all be awkward together and just relax and have fun, but sometimes that camera shyness is rooted in real trauma. I won't sugarcoat it— I have seen abuse at photoshoots, I have seen parents take away bedtime books, I have seen parents scream and storm off frustrated over their children’s “poor” behavior. And let me tell you, I never work with those families again, because I have too many families whose children actually look forward to playing with me, whose parents treat a photoshoot like just another Tuesday evening, celebrating with tacos and cupcakes afterwards.

This little guy really didn't like the camera. Although he was curious, he was uncomfortable. I keep a long lens in my bag at all times, so I photographed this session from 10-20 feet away most of the evening. And you'd never know. Rasmita & Bibek kept it cool, calm, and collected. They simply played with their son. They looked for birds. They popped bubbles. It was the quietest session I've ever had, and one of my favorites to date.

Photos are meant to capture who we are; not depict a life that doesn’t exist. When you're in front of my camera, be the type of person you want your children to remember.

Incoming badass.

So.. given the fact that Casey had her baby the day after our session, I'm convinced Casey was in labor while we trekked the trails to get to this location and she did not even flinch, so safe to say she's a BOSS and her pain tolerance frightens me. Like, I'm actually scared.

Every mama's story means so much to me, but Casey was such a light in my life when we were growing up and if you know her, you get it. When she asked me to document this new adventure, I literally dropped everything to do it. Casey and I hadn't seen each other for FIVE years, and when we met at the start of the trailhead, it was like we were in school again and I immediately felt my cup fill, not even realizing how much I had missed her until I got to see her again. She was the person you turned to when you needed someone to shoot you straight, someone to accept you for who you are, but take no bu****it. And nothing has changed. Motherhood has just made her 1000x more radiant, incredible, and kind.

Case, thanks for letting me do this for you and Leora. I love you both so much!

Q: WHEN DO YOU BOOK A MATERNITY SESSION?!

With the exception of mamas carrying multiples, you should be booking your maternity session around the 28-36 week mark. During the third trimester, your baby bump rounds out as baby grows. This is the most photogenic period for your bump, no matter your body type!

After 36 weeks, baby may start to drop significantly as you both prepare for birth. The home stretch of the third trimester can be uncomfortable and you may not feel at your best. Some mamas may experience an increase in prodromal labor pains around this time, and if medical conditions are present, interventions tend to happen once baby is full term. So, there you have it! This is why we shoot for that sweet spot at the beginning of the third trimester!

3 Steps To A Successful Newborn Session:
✨ Full babies are happy babies.
✨ Babies like to be snuggly and warm.
✨ Mama knows best, always.

And that's it. It's really that simple. I'm a firm believer that baby belongs at home in mom & dad's arms whenever possible. As long as you have your baby with you and a cup of tea (or whatever you prefer!) you have everything you need to have a peaceful earthside sesh. Oh, and something to wear! But I can help with that too :)

There's a post going around some wedding websites asking, “Are photographers able to change their filter?” It's great question! I get asked this a lot. And the short answer is.... yeah, but I don't want to.

So back up. What IS a filter?!

In film days, a filter used to be a tangible piece of glass on the lens of a camera, thus *filtering* the light. Some of us still use filters— I love my UV filter and y'all know I love taping random trash and fabrics on my lens. A filter allows you to manipulate light to create a certain effect. That's really it.

Nowadays, a “filter” is digitally applied after the photo is already taken. The effect is applied to the entirety of an image and stays the same regardless of the image... but if you’ve ever struggled finding the right filter for your photo, you know using the same filter for everything means all the images may look entirely different!

Professional photographers do not use filters to edit.

While we may use filters to produce a photograph, every single setting is meticulously decided upon both in camera and in post, with a specific vision in mind. Rather than clicking a button and using the same digital filter on each image, we break down every element of each photograph to make it look similar. Professional photographers (typically) try to edit consistently to perfect their vision and to ensure new clients know what to expect.

I edit photos in a way that reflects the vision I have, to the best of my ability. I’m constantly growing and changing my patterns. But, I literally cannot edit differently and be happy with it on command— if I wanted to and if I could… then… I would. But I wouldn't be BP anymore.

When you are looking for your photographer, look at their work closely. If it doesn’t speak to you, keep looking. Nail down the style that you like and then find photographers that create images you enjoy. And if you’re looking for warm, organic, natural images.. hello, it’s me. :)

This was a cold, wet, icky day and you'd never guess. I came into this session thinking we would capture a glorious golden hour peeking through the last little bit of foliage... and then the skies opened up and said, NOPE! But it was okay. We didn't melt. We laughed. We played. There is something about letting go of your expectations and just existing together. Forever grateful for Nicole & Joe for letting their kids be, freely. Even in the rain.

A NEW DIRECTION ✨

Over the last six years, I've worked hard to create a client experience that is as easy as possible for new families. Newborns with BP include wardrobe, professional hair and makeup, and a casual experience for healing parents.

Yesterday, I officially finished the classroom requirements to earn my postpartum doula certification. Just a few more things to check off my to-do list and I'll be ready to provide doula care to families in their own homes, and make that knowledge and holistic practice part of the Earthside experience ✨

Y'all I am so excited with where this journey is taking me. I feel such a strong pull in this direction and while the destination is still unclear, I can take this wherever it needs to go to serve new mothers in our community better and in more impactful ways. This year I'm going to be transforming BP into something more than just a photography business. The ability to provide vulnerable families with doula care means that I can do my part in helping mothers rebuild their village. ❤
