All are welcome to join in a beautiful community tradition, Christmas Eve worship at Old Whalers’ Church, with services at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. led by Rev. Nancy Remkus. At 5 p.m. the Old Whalers’ bell choir will play, and Barbara Fusco, mezzo soprano, will offer a solo for the Offertory and during the Service of Candlelighting. Come hear the miraculous story that never grows old and raise your voice in praise with family, friends and neighbors in singing the familiar, beloved carols. We look forward to welcoming you, whether for the first time or the fiftieth.

Old Whalers’ Church invites the community to get in the holiday spirit at our Christmas tree lighting on Thursday, December 5 at 5 p.m. Singing some songs and sipping hot chocolate with friends and neighbors is sure to put a smile on your face!

This Sunday, Oct. 27, we will remember the members of our congregation, community, families and friends that we have lost this year by reading each name aloud as a candle is lit. Pastor Nancy Remkus’s sermon will focus on how challenges in our lives may help make us stronger, as in the Japanese art of Kintsugi, which uses gold to put broken pieces of pottery back together to create stronger and more beautiful pieces of art. Likewise, in healing ourselves, sometimes we may create something new, unique and even more resilient. All are welcome to join us at 10 a.m. for the service of remembrance and the time of fellowship that follows.

This Sunday, October 20, guest minister Rev. Michel Engu Dobbs will speak about “Purifying our Hearts.” Rev. Nancy Remkus will co-celebrate the service.
Born in Paris and raised in New York City, Rev. Dobbs, with his family, moved to Sag Harbor 30 years ago. He continued practicing and studying Zen, taking up practice with Peter Matthiessen - Muryo Roshi. He was ordained in September 2001 and among other activities has taught meditation to inmates at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverhead and co-facilitated annual Bearing Witness retreats with Lakota elders in South Dakota and Wyoming. Everyone is welcome to join us for this wonderful heart-opening service and a time of fellowship afterward.
The service begins at 10 a.m. at 44 Union Street, Sag Harbor.

SUNDAY SCHOOL will meet on Oct. 13. All children are welcome! After the 10 a.m. worship service, Rev. Nancy Remkus will conduct a special service on the lawn at 11:30 to bless all pets.
Collection of the annual offering for Peace & Global Witness has been extended through Sunday. A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the PC(USA) to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of conflict and injustice across the world. Individual congregations retain 25% of this offering and are encouraged to use it for mission efforts in their own communities. Presbyteries and Synods retain an additional 25% (combined) for ministries of peace and reconciliation. The remaining 50% is used by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to advocate for peace and justice in cultures of violence, including our own, through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness. If you don’t see the special envelopes in your pew, look for them on the table in the narthex and downstairs at coffee hour and return them to any Elder or member of the finance committee.

Our Annual Pet Blessing will take place this Sunday, October 13, at 11:30 a.m. on the front lawn of Old Whalers’ Church, following our 10 a.m. service, which will celebrate animals in our world and in our lives. All pets are invited to join us at 11:30 for a special service, with a blessing for their health and well-being as we recognize the love they bring to our lives. A special prayer card and treats will be given to each pet family. All are welcome. Please join us!

Sunday, October 6, is World Communion Sunday, Rev. Nancy Jennings preaching at the 10 a.m. worship service. This day celebrates our oneness in Christ with all our brothers and sisters around the world. It is also, appropriately, when we receive the annual Peace and Global Witness Offering as a way of continuing the ancient Christian practice of sharing what we have with brothers and sisters in need. This special offering enables the church, through the Presbyterian Mission Agency, to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of conflict and injustice across the world. Our church will retain 25% of what we take in to support our own local missions, including maintaining spaces in the building that house a number of community service groups. All are welcome to join in worship this and every Sunday at historic Old Whalers’ Church, and for the time of fellowship that follows.

Please join us on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m., as we celebrate the life and work of Sister Ann Marino, who will be in the pulpit to lead us in worship.
A native of New York City, Ann Thaddeus Marino, R.S.H.M., grew up in the Bronx and graduated from Marymount College in Tarrytown in 1963. Sister Marino was professed as a Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1957, and since then she’s taught in schools owned and staffed by the R.S.H.M. in New York as well as abroad, in Colombia, Spain, and Italy.
Rev. Nancy Remkus will serve as liturgist and talk about Sister Ann’s vocation, the bell choir willl play, and, as every week, Walter Klauss will share his gift of music from the historic organ.
Come hear the wisdom of Sister Ann Marino as the community celebrates the day she took her vows 67 years ago. Everyone is welcome to join in filling the church with joy!
