Barns are a common wedding venue here in Michigan, and not all are the same. Make sure you know exactly what you are getting into before you book!

1. Lighting is Key: Wooden barns will reflect orange in your photos. Barns with white washed insides are better for color-correct photos.

2. Weather-Proof Your Event: Some come with heat and air con, where others do not. Fall can be cold- make sure you have heating options!

3. Restrooms & Amenities: Believe it or not- not every barn wedding venue has flushable toilets.

The magic of a wedding lies in its details—small gestures that speak volumes about love and connection.

Lauren and Elisabeth's day was one that will be cherished forever. From personalized notes to their guests, 9 mini-golf holes to symbolize their 9 years together, and a gorgeous flower backdrop made and installed by the brides themselves, each little detail had a purpose, and helped to create a beautiful backdrop to their commitment to each other.

After the dress has been worn, the cake has been served... many of our couples find themselves asking "What's next?"

Planning a wedding is a big commitment. From your time, your finances, and your mental focus. For many couples, when the day is over they find themselves feeling lost.

My biggest advice for any couple coming to me when they are engaged is the reminder to date each other. Take time to focus on the two of you, where there is absolutely no wedding talk. Make it a priority to plan something, even if only quarterly, where you can escape the hustle and bustle. Then, when the wedding is over- keep the dates going!

After all- the wedding is only one chapter of your life story!

This past weekend we had the greatest honor celebrating the love story of Elisabeth and Lauren.

These two will always hold a special place in my heart. When they reached out to me a year ago, I knew they were "my" brides. Lauren explained their story to me, and also expressed concern that her job working with a camp would make her unavailable leading up immediately prior to the wedding.

They had a plan, and they knew exactly what they wanted. Throughout the planning process they would worry they were giving me too much work! That's how thoughtful these two are.

On the wedding day, I saw another personal peek into their lives. (And they don't even know this story!) I had private conversations with each bride on their wedding day for unrelated reasons, and both times they credited the success of the wedding to each other.

From thoughtful favors (books that were chosen for that guest in mind!) to a wedding themed mini-golf cocktail hour, this wedding truly was one for the books.

Thank you, everyone who came to celebrate these two incredible women. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day come together smoothly.

Advice from your wedding planner-

You need to budget more time.

The common mistake I see made when wedding planning is when brides and grooms underestimate how much time things will take. Remember the 30/5 rule! On a wedding day, something that would normally take you 5 minutes will take 30!

As a planner who has worked as a photographer, I am very picky about timelines and making sure they are the best fit to give my clients what they need and want.

Here's a pro-tip to make your day run smoothly: Prepare a "Details Box" ahead of time!

What's a details box? It's a special container where you gather all the small & important items that you want your photographer to capture and your coordinator to have on hand. This can include:

Wedding Invitation Suite & Save the Dates
Wedding rings boxes and Jewelry
Dress color swatches
Shoes
Perfume
Hair accessories
Special heirlooms
Veil
A copy of your vows
Marriage License

These are items that easily "lost" in the hustle and bustle of the wedding day. Having them in one place ensures nothing gets forgotten in the mix. Plus, it makes it easier for your photographer to create those gorgeous flat-lay shots you love!
