What moment are you looking forward to the most?
Some couples say it’s when their partner walks down the aisle, when they see the other person for the first time. Some say cocktail hour, and yet others are all about the cake cutting. For those of you that have been married, did your most important moment of the day live up to all the hype in your head? Or did the creation of a completely new moment take first place?

Trust.
It’s easier to read than act on sometimes. This can be even more challenging when you’re new to an area-like weddings. For many of us a wedding is a one-time occurence (fingers crossed). Thousands of dollars are flying out of your bank account and it can be unnerving. Did I make the right choice? Could I have found a better deal somewhere else? Maybe if I just send one more picture I’ll feel more confident in my choice and the amount of money I’ve agreed to spend.

Take a breath, pull back for a moment. Do you actually trust your vendor? Vendors can tell when clients give us lip service but then question every.single.thing. we suggest.
Many own a company that has their name front and center. They are the face of their business, so if something goes sideways they personally will need to fix it. It takes an incredible amount of self-confidence to put yourself out there professionally. Yes-they think about your event after business hours. Yes- they’ll work on your concept more than they’d like to admit. Yes-your event consumes their thoughts.

Wedding vendors are people-pleasers to a fault. Many have trouble with boundaries because they just want to make the client happy πŸ˜†. But all kidding aside, please trust the professionals you’ve hired. A lack of trust only limits the incredible things that vendors can dream up and execute for you.

Get excited but don’t get too excited yet, everyone’s favorite puffs of flower goodness are almost here. Yes, it is almost peony season.
Even when in season, you’ll notice an increased cost just for a single stem, versus other flowers.

So why do peonies cost so much?

It can take 2-3 years for a peony bush to produce any blooms. If you are a commercial farm, that is a long time to wait for these beauties to start producing.

However, once established, the bushes can last decades. With proper care, peonies will outlive whoever planted them-kind of crazy, right?

As with the best things in life, peony season is short. A short time on the market means increased demand for when they are in season. And when they’re available, they will cost more because they are not always available.
The higher the demand for these puffs increases their cost every year.

Lastly-another reason peonies are expensive is their sheer size. It can take many flowers to cover the same amount of space in an arrangement. And we as florists, need to account for each stem and its coverage in every single arrangement.

I’m so excited to say that I’ve just planted my first batch of zinnias today. It might be a little early, but I couldn’t help myself.
Zinnias are one of my favorite flowers to use in the Summer and Fall, and I’ve started to plant now for a couple events that will need A LOT of them.
Fingers crossed these little guys sprout!

Are we sure the color of the year is peach fuzz? The number one requested color for my 2024 is light blue. The last time Pantone made this the color of the year was in 2016 with Serenity, and then back in 2000 with Cerulean. I know fashion is cyclical, but are we heading back around already? I feel like there are so many other colors out there that need to trend before this. What are your thoughts?

Have you ever been to a wedding where there are no details? The event comes off as β€˜flat’ and one-dimensional.
Conversely, what about a wedding that has so many little details that it’s nauseating?
It fascinates me the lengths that some people go to make others feel what they want them to feel. At a certain point, the more detail you add to a design, the more shallow it becomes.

So how do you know when to add detail and when to stop?
This, my friends, is what makes design an art. Yes, the devil is in the details. Steve Jobs couldn’t have been more right when he said, β€œ The design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works. β€œ

What can make or break your wedding design?

The color palette.

Scientists estimate that humans can detect around 10 million colors in the world. Just as the selection and usage of color is paramount to a brand’s identity, so is its importance in the event world.
Colors convey personality, mood, emotion, and even status. So how do we select an elevated color palette for a wedding client?
We start with the clients likes and dislikes, and then we move into the realm of color exploration. The term, β€œcolor” is a generalized word that includes all its aspects: shade, hue, tint, and tone.
Hue: the pure color
Shade:adds black
Tint: adds white
Tone: adds grey

It is within this combination of colors that we identify the perfect palette, often trying to evoke certain emotions that resonate with the client. From here we translate the palette into flower colors and species (the living aspects of our design). Then, we add textiles (the non-living aspects) to round out the natural colors of flowers if we cannot replicate that color in Mother Nature.

Bottom line-choose your color palette with the help of your florist. You’ll be surprised how many unique combinations exist, and how invigorating a palette can be to your wedding planning journey.

Any planners out there in the event world that love a good timeline? I know, a funny thing to ask when we sit there for hours constructing and obsessing over how every waking moment of our client’s day should go. But let’s be honest-sometimes the best photo opportunities are the ones we don’t plan for, or necessarily β€œhave time” for.
It’s music to my ears to hear the ceremony start on time, but it’s even better to include all the spontaneity of an event while staying on schedule. It’s a delicate balance for planners, and one of my favorite areas to oversee. Details to us are paramount, but living in your moment and creating that one particular memory that you’ll live with for the rest of your lives is transcendent.

Move over Pantone’s color of the year- peach fuzz! Is it just me or has anyone else noticed more and more chartreuse in the world?
Chartreuse is a shade between yellow and green and has an interesting history.

Fun facts ahead…
The liquor that bears its name was introduced to the public in the mid 17th century, and we see it creeping into the fashion industry shortly after. Though it was popular at its birth this color stopped being used abruptly, and that is why we don’t see it used again until the 20th century (late 1920s in fact).

In order to create the color of chartreuse one had to use arsenic in the recipe. As we all know- arsenic is heavily poisonous and the manufacturers’ employees often suffered painful and horrific deaths when creating this color for dye in home goods and fashion items. The sudden deaths of the workers in the industry halted the color from being produced for three hundred years. It wasn’t until the 1920s that we see the color return to the scene after technology was able to recreate the color without the use of arsenic.

And in short, this has been one of my favorite colors to highlight in my designs. Still considered unusual by most in the industry, this color is the perfect addition to my clients that want to push the envelope. Vibrant and alive, yet mysterious with its historical origins, Chartreuse is a quintessential SISTI & CO color.

Isn't it incredible that some of Mother Nature's flowers are available for such short periods of time? What a great example of savoring the things that you have right in front of you, and truly enjoying those moments. A perfect example is bearded irises. They are featured in this bouquet and only show up once or twice a year at the market. Sometimes, they won't show at all, and we'll have to wait until the following year.

I think Nature was the first to discover that humans will always want what is in short supply and exclusive to a certain time of the year. Mother Nature- she's pretty smart!

Why do people say your wedding is only one day?

Yes, it’s the first day of the rest of your lives together. Yes, it’s probably the easiest day of your lives together.

In reality, the memory of your wedding day will last for the rest of your lives. As we age we might forget the nuances, but we will still remember our wedding in some form, and how we felt.

I know that some people say this to keep themselves and their close friends/family in check about not spending too much money. Thanks, Aunt Diane, but hold on for a minute. It’s not wrong to spend to your money the way you want, especially if you do so with a plan in mind. Think, β€œI’ll spend more on this area, but less here because this is what I care about.” This isn’t wrong, in fact-it might give you more joy than you thought. Be smart, and spend wisely, but give yourself the opportunity to enjoy and be excited. You’ll remember this years down the road.

Do you love travel?
I recently was in a conversation where one of the speakers remarked that they don’t like to travel. I was absolutely surprised. Have you heard this too?
But then I started to think about why I love to travel, especially for business.
-because it’s a challenge.
An adventure, yes, but working in another country with new colleagues, unfamiliar languages, and new environments brings fresh challenges. Out of this challenge comes growth. I cannot begin to tell you how demanding it is to source flowers in a foreign country!I’ve learned more about myself on those solo trips to my destination than I ever thought I would. When I return to my home I appreciate more of β€œthe little things”. I’m able to reflect, identify and plan for what to do differently the next time, personally and professionally. I haven’t given up the hope yet for traveling for business this year. Any thoughts on where I should go next?
Marrakech was a dream come true, and I will do it all over again with soon.
