With each year that passes, the gratefulness I have for my mama grows. It really wasn’t until I had kids of my own that I realized how absolutely amazing she is. She is the most selfless person I know. Her kindness is endless and her devotion to those she loves is unwavering. She is the doer of all things and throws an epic tea party. She is absolutely, hands down the greatest mother there is and I thank God everyday that she is mine.

Since starting DRF I’ve had numerous negative Nancys tell me that most small businesses fail within the first 5 years. I’d do an inner eye roll and say to myself- watch me kill it🤘🏼I guess it goes without saying that doubt and negativity just lights my stubborn ass fire, but I now see why small business owners throw in the towel after battling so much.

I feel like I’m constantly gushing about how amazing it is to be self employed and it really is, but it’s also freaking hard man. There is ALWAYS a new unforeseen expense and if you aren’t working all the freaking time you start feeling guilty. You get to a point where you realize you don’t take home a steady check but rather invest it back into your business and that can sometimes seem daunting.

My point is this- there’s a reason everyone isn’t self employed. You have to have passion for your craft, an intense work ethic, and the patience to know your investing in something bigger than an immediate paycheck. You just have to focus on setting goals and crushing them without getting discouraged and focusing on the set backs.

That being said- I’m keeping these Spanish tiles on my mind. How killer would they look in the master bath remodel I currently can’t afford? Lol. I’ll get them eventually👊🏼

I just love elopements so much. When I got married 6 years ago, Rick tried to convince me to elope and I gave him a big fat “HELL NO”. At that time all I thought of was Elvis as the officiant and spending our first night as husband and wife at the Golden Nugget. Clearly I put in zero effort thinking of other ways to do it😂 I’ve done personal flower for over a dozen elopements and each one has been so special. Traveling to the mountains or the beach with a beautiful dress, a killer bouquet, an amazing photographer and your vows in hand. It’s such a stress free celebration of your commitment to love one another forever without breaking the bank.

The reality is weddings are expensive- I’ve had so many people reach out and ask what our rates are or for package pricing and there isn’t really an answer. It depends on how many centerpieces you need, do you want large statement pieces like an arch or a photo backdrop, do you have one bridesmaid or twelve? What’s your style? Do you want peonies or ge**er daisies? The list goes on...

I’ve debated about sharing this last part but I think it will give couples a little perspective on average pricing. The weddings that DRF has done range from $3,000 all the way up to $10,000, and the suggestion that 10-15% of your total wedding budget should be allocated for florals is pretty accurate. I’m sure there are some of you with your jaws on the floor wondering how flowers can cost so much. THEY JUST DO. Typically I spend about 30-50% on the actual flowers, and then there is all of the other costs to factor in. Hiring people, materials, vases, van rentals, gas, hotels, candles, etc. And I think everyone can agree that you want to make more than $5 an hour when you work. I pride myself on working within clients’ budgets, but the hard truth is you can’t have champagne taste on a beer budget. I was a Pabs Blue Ribbon kinda bride and that’s why I did my own flowers and I still spent $1500 and was up until 2am the night before making bouts and bouquets.

So long story long, it’s all about choices. And elopements seem like a fantastic choice if you don’t have the cheddar for a full blown wedding.

We spent the last week of summer up at Nacimiento with some of our faves and it was a freaking blast. It was so refreshing to have no internet and phones around and spend the last days of summer playing hard🤘🏼 Don’t get me wrong- I’d have no problemo being a trust fund baby and in vacay mode 24/7, but I’m not mad about the massive amount of flower goodness headed my way. @ Lake Nacimiento, California

3 years ago Desert Rose Florals became official🤘🏼I had received my first check made out to DRF and no joke went to bank to try and cash it🙈 Like the teller was gonna say, “OMG such a cute name! Did you come up with that? Oh and do you want it in $20s or $100s?” So basically I left in shame and was forced to legitimately create a business. Seriously- NO CLUE what I was doing but I jumped through the loops and hoops to make it happen and what a freaking wild amazing ride it’s been.

I figure I’d through it back to my first favorite bouquet. Thanks Belmont’s for being the first clients to let me do my thing😘😘

If you know me, you know I’m a little houseplant obsessed🌿so when I got the opportunity to do a houseplant inspired wedding I nearly crapped my pants. I’d love to have a secret video of me when I get the opportunity to do something super cool- It starts with some aggressive profanities and hip thrusts. Then once my mind starts coming up with ideas it turns into a floral slideshow on steroids where the behaviors get more aggressive and it doesn’t matter whose around. It’s all just part of the creative process🤷🏻‍♀️😂

For the tables, we alternated potted house plants (mainly pothos and hearty ferns to withstand the heat) with large white and greenery centerpieces and filled in with a mixture of glass bud vases, terra-cotta and ceramics filled with floral goodness.

I almost cancelled this workshop because we weren’t getting many sign ups but boy howdy I’m so glad I didn’t...look at that freaking line up! And I had a blast hanging out with all the talented ladies who came out and were open to hear me ramble on and excessively use my hands while I talk about flowers. Thank you for thinking of me and setting up this little workshop and to for allowing us to use there space and for having good taste in statement walls.

Our goal is to have 4-5 more workshops up in the shop by the end of the month so be on the lookout👊🏼
