The musical instrument called the kora has been played almost exclusively by men since the 13th century, strictly passed down as a family tradition in West Africa. Constructed from a large half calabash, cowhide, thick wooden neck and leather tuning loops and strings (now nylon), the kora is several centuries old. Precursors go back much further. I was deeply honored to be part of this transformative panel and to contribute to such a vital cause. Being involved with this cohort and working alongside dedicated individuals in our mission to drive local and regional policy change is incredibly fulfilling.
Our shared focus is on addressing the urgent issues faced by people of color, low-income individuals, immigrants, and refugees—those who are often hit hardest by exploitation, climate change, poor air quality, rising costs, and limited job opportunities. By placing these communities at the center of public strategies, we aim to achieve true racial, economic, and regional equity.
I am especially grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Community Leadership Institute. This fellowship program is a beacon of hope and progress, empowering emerging leaders from marginalized communities to take their rightful place on local boards and commissions. It’s inspiring to see how this program supports and trains these leaders, ensuring that their voices are heard and their perspectives shape the policies that affect their communities.
