Festivals feature local and regional musicians and bands of all music genres, camping, food and craft vendors & games. On September 2, 2011, at an early age of 47, Marcus Hayes Hewett, Jr. A native of southeastern Brunswick County, Ocean Isle Beach more specifically, a lover of music, and a friend to all, Marcus was like many who have fought cancer, unaware of the symptoms. By the time the doctors
knew exactly what was wrong with him; the cancer was already at stage 4 and still growing. His family and friends quickly gathered around him like an army of soldiers to help him fight. He remained positive and determined until the very end. He made us all promise we wouldn't "put our heads in the sand and stop living, but to carry on because tomorrow is another day". At Marcus' request, a party was coordinated in November down at the family farm to celebrate his life. What was to be a gathering of close family and friends turned into a large musical event with over 100 people in attendance. Bands and musicians took over the homemade stage. People gathered, the grills were going, tents popped up and a spirit like no other took over the entire campsite. Everyone had such a wonderful time that they asked to come back and do it again. So, it was decided that the event would be officially named Marcaroo and would become an annual fundraiser for cancer research & awareness, hospice, or for individuals in the MARCAROO family fighting cancer. Additionally, Marcaroo is a wonderful venue for local musicians, bands and singers to build an audience and help a wonderful cause.
