🎉Congrats to Hannah and Kevin Macsay on their big day — our FIRST wedding here at the historic, newly renovated Crystal Fountain Park! ✨

Their autumn decor accented The Wentworth beautifully, and the woods behind the venue were in gorgeous color. 🍂 Thanks to the chapel, rain didn't spoil their photos; the couple was able to snap post-ceremony photos outside with the woods backdrop.

We are overjoyed for Mr. & Mrs. Macsay as they begin their lives together. 🥰 Here's to many more memorable days!

On August 17, 1896, the tri-state conclave was held at Wentworth Grove. The Fort Wayne News reported 12,000 in attendance, one of the largest gatherings ever held in Defiance County to this day. This event sparked the beginning of Crystal Fountain Park and the new namesake of our historic hall: The Wentworth. ❤️‍🔥

We are overwhelmed at the support, enthusiasm, and excitement the community has shown us. ❤️ Special thanks to Sherwood Mayor Jack Stantz, Mayor-Elect Dave Weaner, Village of Sherwood Council members, Defiance County Commissioners, Paulding County and Defiance County Economic Development, and all the local officials for “lending their approval” to the park. ⭐️ (Quoted from our first President Fred Dunakin in 1914)

Crystal Fountain Park history at a glance:

🔮 1907: 1st Spiritualist Camp in Ohio:

It was the first spiritualist park in the state of Ohio, established by pioneer Thomas Wentworth from New York. Built in 1910, Wentworth Hall supporters paid $1 to have their name engraved in the cement blocks set in the walls. (Those names are still there today.) Retreats, inspirational lectures, and other events were held there.

⛲️ 💦 Healing Waters, Hotel, & Sanitarium:

“White crystals flowed forth” – and thus began the legend (and namesake) of the “healing waters” of Crystal Fountain Park. Travelers came by rail from around the country (and even the world) for the annual retreat and healing services. A hotel and sanitarium were built, and one of the first public pools in the state was filled with the water.

🛼 🎶 💃🏻 ⚾️ 1941: Skating Rink, Dance Hall, & Ball Park:

In 1918, a pine floor was installed, and the auditorium was used for community dances with visiting orchestras. In 1941, Crystal Fountain Park was the first skating rink in Defiance County. Three layers of wood floor were laid above the original pine and dirt floors. You can see the reclaimed flooring in The Wentworth Bar, the stage surround, and other places throughout Crystal Fountain Park. The ballpark hosted major league players, and ballroom dancing was held weekly with live bands.

🏹 💍 1994: Archery, Weddings, & Community Events:

In the recent past, The Wentworth was used for weddings, various community gatherings, and events by Central Local Schools. Many recall attending local archery events there.

🤝 2021: Crystal Fountain Park was owned by the Village of Sherwood until 2021, when it was purchased by Luke and Levi Kuhn.

♥️ TODAY: The venue is family-owned and locally operated. Born in Defiance and raised in the Village of Sherwood, brothers Luke and Levi Kuhn are third-generation Sherwood businessmen passionate about their small-town dreams. Joined by their respective wives, Samantha and Kelsey, the Kuhn family’s goal is to restore the park to its former glory, preserve NW Ohio history, and help the community flourish.

📖 On Saturday, one of our owners — Luke Kuhn — volunteered for the Sherwood Cemetery Walk, narrating the interesting story of resident Calvin Renollet’s life (1879-1970). 🎤

Why Mr. Renollet?

This hardworking man was a Superintendent of Crystal Fountain Park for 10 years, often being interviewed by area newspapers on events held there and to share his spiritualist philosophy on how to better oneself through this life. 📰

In a 1963 Crescent-News interview, Calvin said: “A person who does wrong hinders movement forward... In our philosophy, there is a good life for everyone in the future, a higher expression of life regardless of what he believes in.” ✨

Crystal Fountain Park, then encompassing 32 acres, become incorporated in 1909. What is now Wentworth Hall was built in 1911, with people from around the nation visiting for lectures, camps, and other activities. 🔨

Thanks to Sherwood Branch Library (and Defiance Public Library System) for holding such a wonderful event to educate the impact these local residents had on our village — and our area’s history as a whole! 📜

We hope Calvin would be proud to see Crystal Fountain Park being brought back to life today! 🎊

— Josephine Etchie (1863-1950): owner and publisher of the Sherwood Chronicle from 1911-1944.

— John M Johnson (1846-1937): Member of Company F, 48th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War; longest living veteran in Sherwood.

— Dr. Henry Lindersmith (1867-1942): Health Commissioner of Defiance County from 1936-1941.

— Zeno Miller (1848-1915): First mayor of Sherwood, businessman
