A few days ago, I celebrated my third anniversary in America πΊπΈ and felt deeply loved by God. He has blessed me in only three years, more than I could have imagined.

βα»gbanjeβ (Igbo terminology for a child spirit who comes and goes) is a proof-of-concept/short film based on my unproduced feature film βWater Girl,β about an α»gbanje girl born in America. The goal was to make the film this year but unfortunately couldnβt. But as a very determined filmmaker, I couldnβt let the year pass without creating something, and so this proof of concept was made.
As I prepare to show this concept for the first time in Houston next week, I wanted to tease you guys a little. What do you think?
Iβm very hopeful that this project will come to pass real soon.

When Nnamdi Kanaga reached out to me to sing for his feature film, Water Girl, a film about an Ogbanje girl born in America, I asked him to send a voice note with the lyrics.
He said he wanted something simple, so I called Udemadu Kasiemobi, gave him the idea, and then sent him a voice recording.
The funny thing is, I just woke up that morning and didn't even do a proper voice warmup.
When Kasie returned the first recording with a sample accompaniment, Nnamdi said he wanted it slower.
While still in bed, I recorded another one and sent it to Kasie and informed him that I would do a proper recording later that day in school after I had warmed up.
Long story short, Kasie said he liked how plain my voice sounded, and Nnamdi said he loved the Africanness in my early morning voice.
Still trying to decide whether to send a professional recording, I listened to Kasie's final recording without thinking of my voice placement, vibrato, breath energy, and phrasing. Then came those beautiful nostalgic memories of how I used to sing with my cousins every December when we traveled to the village; and how we sang with so much joy, not minding how interesting our voices sounded; we sang from the soul.
Then I realized how much I had missed home (Nigeria).
I have known Nnamdi for more than a decade. I sang and acted in his final year play at the theater and film studies department, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. And I've been following his progress since he moved to America. Now that we are both in America, I look forward to creating magic with this talented and intelligent writer, director, producer, and independent filmmaker. Thank you, Nnamdi, for the honor; I look forward to more opportunities.

"Resignation" by Florence Price was one of my favorite pieces from my recital collections.
One thing I struggled with rehearsing this spiritual was tearing up because of how deep the words I sang were. Another challenge was singing the correct diction in the African American spiritual style.
There was a whole lot that I needed to learn within a short period. With the help of Dr. Lori, who gave me a two-hour masterclass on diction, phrasing and interpretation, I could perform this beautiful masterpiece.
I hope you enjoy my performance.
Being one of the presenters at the Notre Dame Africa Conference is an honor. I look forward to sharing my research work with fellow African graduate students, undergraduates and Notre Dame faculty.
On Monday, the 27th of March, Obim and I visited Rev. Fr. Patrick Isichei.
Fr Patrick supported my musical career through his generous donation for my tuition at the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
When he gave me a scholarship, he was the parish priest of Saint Columba's Catholic Church Agbor, Delta State, where I served as a choir mistress, altar girls president, and lector.
Before I applied to study at UNN with the help of Rev. Sr. Perpetual Ike, Fr Patrick always reminded me of how blessed I was to have such a precious gift and have the opportunity to serve God with the gift God bestowed on me (my voice).
He relentlessly encouraged me to pursue my singing career and promised to support me in any way possible. After I graduated from UNN, I tried severally to reach out to him but couldn't find his cell phone number. When I heard he was in the United States, I contacted Fr. Cyril Ofuonye, who asked a few friends and was able to get his phone number.
We drove 6 hours to visit him, and coincidentally, yesterday was his 86th birthday. He was excited to see me and finally meet my husband. We prayed together and he said he couldn't wait to see what our children would look like.π₯°
Fr. Patrick Isichei and Rev. Sr. Perpetual Ike played significant roles in the person I have become today. I fervently pray that God will continue to bless them and all those who have supported me in one way or another.

You all know how much I love singing Nigerian art songs. There are four Nigerian art and songs in my selections, and works by famous classical music composers.
I am excited to share my interpretation of these beautiful compositions with you.
Dear self,
The dream you had as an 8-year-old is becoming a reality.
Do you recall how much you loved singing and dreamed of traveling worldwide to share your gift? You believed that someday, you would travel to the United States to do your master's degree in music, you weren't sure how that dream would come to pass, but you hoped for the best; thank you for not giving up on your goals.
You were that little girl who sang in the rain and always imagined herself singing in a big scream. You loved God and always looked forward to singing in his vineyard. You believed you were a blessing and perfectly played the role of a blessing. Your journey hasn't been smooth, but for every bold step you have taken, for every time you showed up for yourself and your loved ones, well done darling.
Regardless of the setbacks, discouragements, and challenges, thank you for deciding to never quit.
I hope you know that you still have a long way to go. The universe knows you have big dreams to achieve, and the universe is in your favor. God is doing wonders in your life and will always be with you.
Congratulations, and I wish you the best in your final master's recital.
NB: To all those who stood by me through thick and thin, thank you for not giving up on me. I pray for you every day, think about you, and wish you the best.
My final master's recital is on the 24th of March, and it is specially dedicated to my mother and all the beautiful women who continue to make positive changes in the world.
Women are gifts to humanity; they illuminate the universe with their love and kindness and have continued to express themselves through creativity, passion, and productivity.
Happy International Women's Day to all the beautiful women across the world.
May all women be free to live, dream, and achieve their goals.
Raw talent π₯°β€οΈ
Waking up to this Instagram post by Dr. Lori Celeste Hicks got me in tears.
The piece I sang for this master class is titled βLet us break bread together on our knees,β a spiritual arranged by Moses Hogan. Thank you, Dr. Lori, for allowing me to drink from your pot of wisdom. And a big thank you to the Sacred music program at Notre Dame for the numerous master classes.
When I was applying to schools abroad, I spoke to a mentor who asked me what I intended to study, and I said music. She was not impressed with my decisions but asked why. I narrated my love for the art and how I would love to be better and hopefully an authority in music. She said some amazing things to encourage me, but one sentence that made sense then, and still makes sense till today, was: Do the things you love now so that in your old age you will not regret never trying.
In order to achieve a goal, whether realistic or unrealistic, one needs to make an attempt. At the time we had this discussion, my traveling abroad was not realistic because of the financial implications, but I kept applying to several schools and finally got a fully funded program here in the United States.
Every day I wake up, I thank God that I made the decision to stay positive and never relented.
Don't stop trying, no matter how many times you fail, never relent.
Instead, restrategize and try again.
Happy New month friends.

I urge all registered voters, who have not collected their PVCs to use this opportunity and do so, as we get ready to take back our country for good.

This is a short clip recorded by my big sis Fatima Anyekema on the second night of our show. We've had three nights and can't wait for the finale today at 2:30 pm. Stay tuned for more videos π₯° NB: I enjoyed acting with Scottie Rogers on stage. They are an amazing singer and actor.
I sat silently in my room with tears of joy while savoring life's beauty and the numerous blessings God has given me, and this song came to mind. "Munachimuso" is an art song in the Igbo language that expresses joy and gratitude to one's maker in celebration of beauty, blessings, guidance, and coming of age. It is an open acknowledgement and affirmation of the divine while basking in warmth. This beautiful song is composed by my friend Echezonachukwu Nduka, a pianist, poet, author, recording artist, and ethnomusicologist specializing in the piano music of West African composers. This performance wouldn't be successful without the help of my dear friends Fatima Anyekema, Chiemerie, Osaro, and Nnamdi. My collaborative pianist Droir Baitel did a great job on the piano.

Singing the Nigerian National Anthem at the Inauguration and Induction ceremony of Umu Ada in Massachusetts was very emotional. I almost broke down to tears when I sang the line, "Guide our leaders right, help our youths the truth to know." In times like this, one would hope, pray and take deliberate actions to stand for the truth. We pray that our Nigerian Youths and those eligible to vote would stand for the truth through their words and actions and vote for the right man to lead our great nation.
