Look closely: What's wrong with this picture? When you see it, leave a comment!

This is made by one of the biggest order gatherers that comes up when you google "Florist near me" or similar.

* Order gatherers take 30% of the total cost of the arrangements they advertise. If I take orders from them, I would make less than minimum wage.

* The OG calls the nearest florist, and their number is "spoofed," so they can't be blocked. They LOVE using hospital phone numbers. This is not illegal, unfortunately. If I don't answer the call from the hospital, they will call directly from their personal phones. It is never the same number.

* If they get a hold of the florist, they will try listing off a recipe. The recipe is specific and we are rarely going to have the exact mix of flowers and colors of each type in our stores. They are also NEVER locally grown flowers.

* We don't see a picture of the style the arrangement is designed in. It won't look like the picture you ordered. The quantity of the flowers at wholesale cost in this arrangement would require me to purchase approximately $150 in flowers, plus the vase, and hopefully sell the leftovers. Even if I could get them by the stem, the cost is still too high to make more than minimum wage.

* Most florists are on a mission to REJECT these orders from order gatherers, because we can't afford to fill them. We can't afford to give 30%, which is higher than what we charge for labor, to a middleman.

This is a LOSE LOSE. There's a high chance your order will get cancelled, created in a smaller size, or using less expensive flowers as substitutes. Because my reputation is everything, I do not take these orders.

Come directly to me! If your husband googles Valentine's Day Flowers, there's a very high chance he'll be scrolling past a dozen order gatherers paying for their top space online. Help him find me, and get full value for your order!!

Getting the most out of your wedding floral budget

These aisle pieces make a BIG statement! Depending on your budget, they can be used every row or every other row to make the runner vibe, or use two at the entrance of the aisle and two at the front works great too. These can easily be picked up and moved to pre-selected tables, using less expensive pieces for the remainder of your tables.

Typical cost: $175-$300 each (dependant on flowers used and complexity of the design)

Monochrome (greenery with white flowers) is always less expensive. The multi-color "wildflower" design requires significantly more varieties of flowers and the planning is more complex, as well as flower placement.

What am I doing in this shot? These flowers needed just a touch of water added after delivery, but not so much that they would spill when moved to tables. I believe I watered these particular babies 6 times during the time I had them!

Taking it back a little...

Back from a few years ago already, when I did this gorgeous cake table arrangement from an inspiration picture! I am active on several florist pages, and a newbie was asking how to get height on their blooms... There's a few things that go into it!

* Mechanics. Hidden under this beautiful tablecloth is a small box, this arrangement is two pieces. One dish with floral foam sits on top, one on bottom, with the stems inserted to make it look like it's one piece. This guy was 3 -3.5 feet tall!

* Use of linear elements and line flowers... Think vertical. The tall stuff goes in back! Branches, grasses, and flowering stems such as glads, stock, delphinium, snapdragons, and larkspur fit into this category. Long stemmed roses can also work, but then the bloom will be reaching up instead of out. (As you can see with my top rose! If I had a do-over, I may have wanted to add something like white delphinium here)

* Pull the eye up AND down, if you can, to visually stretch a vertical design. This was on a table, so using trailing greenery fit the bill. (In this case, Italian ruscus)

As always, I'm looking to better my skills.... And if I had a do-over, I would have created more of a lower central focal point here. I would also love to have been able to use a few more roses or possibly hydrangea, there's not enough white here and no solid focal point. Still beautiful? Absolutely, and I love working with this family years later, and have enjoyed watching their growth as they've supported me in mine!

Hopefully everyone had a great Christmas and have some down time to clean up and find new homes for the influx of stuff!

The week after Christmas is usually pretty quiet, so I'm going to take the time off and be unavailable for orders until January 2nd. This will give me the family time I've set aside while working for the past two months and get a breather :)

Yearly PSA on goldenrod (solidago) vs. Ragweed (demonspawn) The pollen from Goldenrod is too heavy to become airborne. Although they blossom at the same time, Ragweed remains green, spewing out huge quantities of airborne pollen, while its louder but harmless neighbor gets the blame for your allergy attacks. I use goldenrod in some of my fall bouquets because it has a beautiful color and really does scream "FALL!" Just remember... the pollen falls down, too. It's just fine being used in floral arrangements, so cut away!

Stretched Thin I don't know about you, but I feel that now that school is back in, I'm driving twice as much and my focus is SHOT. I might be quiet on socials, but I'm busy creating! Now is a great time to get locally grown flowers, I have *buckets* ready to work with and I'm always excited to step away from my computer! ... Speaking of which, I spend no less than an hour communicating with brides each day over email and messenger this time of year. It's HOT!! The flowers are loving it though!!

We don't just mark it up when you say it's for a wedding... The communication, the formulation of recipes, and the prep... They all happen before the flowers come in. Hard goods and buckets set up for this Friday's wedding happened TODAY, so that when I start with greenery tomorrow, I'm ready to process directly into the bucket sorted by recipe for each item. On a spreadsheet a month ago, I broke down each item by flower types (recipe) and then multiplied, then added up to figure out how much to order. Here's my coolers, all set up and ready to receive flowers locally grown, sourced from Kennicotts, and peonies from Alaska!

Boiled flowers Yep... You've seen me spray paint flowers, you've seen me light them on fire, but I also boil them! Boiling the ends of poppies helps seal in the moisture inside the stems. They are very fragile flowers to begin with, and we want to make sure that they hold all day long on your wedding day. Most of mine are done blooming now, but I had just a few that I could play with. I wanted to be fully confident in using them in my designs next week for a super bright and cheerful colored wedding!

Me: I'm going to pull way back on growing things and focus on design. Also me: .... Wait, I can skip starting seeds and just buy plugs?! *triples garden*
