Yesterday was the first slow day back on the farm after spending the last several days helping family and friends recover from the recent floods.

While thankfully our home had no water, our flowers have really suffered. Many of our perennial fields, newly planted and established, were under water for several days and our annual field is slow to flower without the needed warmth and so much moisture. We are weeks behind previous years, but rest assured, there will be blooms!

Hey friends! We had some help weeding the annual and perennial fields today before the rain came. Which was greatly appreciated and provided some great entertainment. Some flowers are looking good, some would love some warm weather and less rain! While chatting with farmers market friends, it seems our flowers aren’t the only thing that are struggling, everything is a delayed and wet! Certainly a humbling year for us as we are reminded we are at the mercy of Mother Nature.

On the flip side, the (soon-to-be) laying ladies are enjoying the worms and our company while we are out in the field! And when the littlest of the team gives them breakfast!

It’s peony season! 😍 We will be at the Spencer Farmers Market on Saturday morning with peony bunches! These beauties are the first thing we planted the flower farm in fall of 2020! We have added a few varieties and 80 more peonies since but the original plants are really providing majority of the blooms for the year!

Spending this slightly windy day working on raised beds. The soil at our new growing space has a little more clay than dahlias will appreciate (they are divas). Having raised beds will allow the dahlias to thrive as well as making digging dahlia tubers in the fall much easier!

We have been a little absent on social media but that doesn’t mean we have been absent at the farm. Despite the wind, excess rain and a little hail, we have the annual field planted! These trays represent the thousands of seedlings in the field.

We still have a few successions to direst sow as well as a few plugs coming to replace some seedlings lost due to rain, but we progressed by leaps and bounds last week!

Coming Soon!! Peonies are on the horizon!! We harvested the first few Peonies today and they are stunning 😍 Be on the lookout this week for more information on our Peony sale. The next couple days have very favorable conditions to push more of our plants into bloom.

Thank you certainly isn’t enough to show our appreciation for everyone who showed up to The Bloom Bar @ Century Farms! It was such a fun night and you ladies showed up for it! We are hoping to plan another one for later in the summer! Bloom bar with sunflowers, snapdragons & all the fun filler? Yes, please!

Also, thanks for all the love for our tulips! We are already putting in the order for next season so be to sure to comment what you loved and what you wish you would have seen more of!

Here at the farm the next week consists of laying fabric, getting all the plants into the ground, and direct seeds some successions!

We will be popping up at The Commons Parking lot (Spencer South T where the Spencer Farmers Market is located) the next TWO Saturdays! We will have wrapped bouquets with new tulip varieties this weekend grab and go style!

We're making the most of the “dry” weather by harvesting tulips like crazy! This morning, I'll be picking as many tulips as possible before potential severe weather sets in. Orders for Wednesday for free delivery or on-farm pickup can be sent today, and I'll respond to all messages when I return from the field. Double tulips and parrots are in full bloom, and new varieties are emerging! Message us with your order and if you prefer pickup or the delivery address in your message. Thank you!

Early in the season we were worried about how dry it had been (like most farmers). We prayed for rain, watered well, and waited for the tulips to pop up. Bryan assumed he would have a cleaner, easier harvest than in past years due to the lack of moisture in the soil, but boy were we wrong. Tulips don’t like to wait to be harvested. They don’t stay for a few days in the field like other flowers. When they are ready, you have to grab them, bulb and all. Today we had a few hundred double tulips that were ready so Bryan braved the rain, got his boots on and brought a bucket load in, only to be stopped by lightning in the area.

Tulips have arrived! After tucking them in the last few nights to prevent frost damage, we uncovered them to see some beautiful blooms this afternoon! We will have fresh flowers available just in time for Administrative Professionals Day on Wednesday April 24th!

All the flowers that will adorn your kitchen table this summer are being started in our grow room as you read this! With main season annuals being planted out in about 6 weeks, we are busy hardening off cool seasons flowers (think stock and snaps), and starting heat loving flowers (all the zinnias and celosia in new fun varieties)! Fall on this flower farm means cleaning out beds, pulling fabric, digging dahlia tubers, patiently waiting for tulip bulbs to show up and doubling our peony field! Shelly with Silo Ridge Peony Farm delivered the most gorgeous roots last week and we got right to work putting them in the ground before this cold snap set in!

We know it’s fall because we are planting by the gleam from our headlights!
