The story goes, Marc had never been to LA prior to recording the Mannequin sessions. He checked into his room at the Sheraton Universal and went down to hit the pool.

There he was confronted with the vision of none other than Telly Savalas exiting the water in a pink Speedo.

He changed his mind about the dip. Figured he’d let the water filter a bit.

What you have here is essentially a Steely Dan production. All the usual suspects. And a real love letter to the beaches south of Venice from an out of towner. A true yacht rock sleeper.

First official release on the Uncle Jam Records label, formed by George Clinton and his business manager Archie Ivy, and distributed by CBS Records. The band was formed by bassist Bootsy Collins after losing the rights to the name Rubber Band to a folk music group of the same name. All the usual P-Funk suspects.

Re-released briefly in Japan on compact disc in the late eighties. Out of print.

This Jimmy Green joint was cut in Alton, IL - just down the road from my humble abode. 1978 was the year. Howard Neal’s Shoestring Label was putting out jams like this by local talent literally on a “shoestring”. I had heard about this Numero reissue, and saw that one of my fave shops in St. Louis, Dead Wax Records STL, had done a Numero record release event for it.

Found my copy in Vegas baby.

Steve (Lacy) scores extra points in my book for being an R. Stevie Moore fan. Stevie (Moore) is an acquaintance (of mine). He’s also an ACQUIRED taste. Once you’ve drank the kool aid though, you’re hooked. I played drums in a duo opening for him in Nashville once. Took him shopping at Kroger and hung out at his crib before the gig. That was a unique experience I assure you 👽

Here’s one in honor of National DJ Day (Jan 20th)…my favorite cut off Duck Rock (1983).

Impresario McLaren (S*x Pistols) drank the proverbial kool-aid the nascent Hip Hop scene in The Bronx was bringing, and collab’d with The World Famous Supreme Team - two DJ’s who programmed an influential radio show in NYC.

It was highly instrumental in bringing this new art form to Britain, and the world at large.

I’ve been away from the page for a bit as life has presented some real “change”…so appropriately I’m presenting this banger from 1981.

Recorded in Italy, this second album from the group is a post-disco sleeper in the best sense of the word:

noun: SLEEPER; a movie, book, play, etc., that achieves sudden unexpected success after initially attracting little attention, typically one that proves popular without much promotion or expenditure.

French house duo Le Knight Club (Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk) sampled parts of this song for two of their tracks.

But I didn’t need that factoid to convince me - MY EARS DON’T LIE 🎼💕

When Prince found out Time members Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (who were under contract with The Purple One) were working with a relatively unknown SOS Band in Atlanta - he fired their asses.

As a result, they were free to craft a number of what I call "Darkwave R & B" classics with the group - with this cut being IMO the pinnacle of that colab. Sultry, and CREEPY somehow. The sound created a genre of sorts in the mid to late 80's (Loose Ends, Change, etc). The extended mixes of these cuts on Tabu are surprisingly hard to find. I've gotten lucky.

But I've got handfuls of the long player. I just can't leave 'em in the bin. SUCH A BANGER. Hit me up!
