The nights have a deeper chill to them now, one that cuts through clothes and lingers in the bones. The first snow is usually light and does not linger, long a sign that winter's powerful onslaught is imminent when Old Man Winter tightens his icy grip.

In our busy lives, it's easy to get caught up in the daily grind. Our passions tend to get pushed aside. Make time for the activities and people that inspire you. Carve out space for that hobby you love, the instrument you've always wanted to play, or call up that friend. Take a class on something that excites you. While life moves fast, time stands still for no one. Don't let the weeks, months and years slip by without pursuing your passions.

The old saying goes that being apart from someone you care about makes you appreciate them more. However, over time, if you are apart for too long, you may start to lose interest and look for other options.

The lesson here is that you should not only want to spend time with someone when it suits you, and then expect them to welcome you back with open arms when you finally make an effort. If you truly care about a person or relationship, you need to put in consistent effort to stay close, or you risk losing them.

You cannot get angry when you receive what you expect. This is the law of attraction - you attract what you focus on. Do not get upset when people no longer want to spend time with you, especially new "friends", once they realize what kind of person you really are. It is only a matter of time before you lose everyone again due to your immaturity and selfishness.

Put in the work to become a better friend, partner or person. Make the time to show you care about others through your words and actions. Do not blame others when relationships fade due to your own negligence or poor behavior. Take responsibility for the energy you put out into the world, and the way you treat people. Overcome your selfish tendencies and adolescence.

When times are tough, it's easy to focus on what you lack rather than what you have. But true strength comes from being grateful for the blessings in your life, no matter how small they may seem.

While we can't control when these surprises happen, we can control our ability to receive them. By cutting off distractions and being fully present in each moment. When you make space in your life for the right reasons your senses become heightened, and you gain a new appreciation for simple pleasures.

Working out of town for extended periods of time is a miserable experience. The hardest part is feeling like the people who matter the most truly don’t want to make an effort to stay connected. The calls and texts quickly dwindle until it feels lonely.

Why open myself up to people and invest in building a genuine connection if they are just going to disappear at the first sign of inconvenience or physical distance? It’s not worth setting myself up for disappointment or getting hurt time and time again.

Keep your distance and do not feel guilty for being wary about putting up walls to avoid being taken advantage. Anyone worth it will make time and effort to be there for you even when you are not around. Do not settle for less than that.
