It felt a little bit like fall last week with the rain (shocker!!) and even though we are back into summer weather again, it got me in the mood for fall. And then I realized I still have so many senior sessions from last year that I never posted including one of my favorite fall sessions!

We shot this session in November when the fall color was at its peak and I've got to say the valley was showing off it's fall vibes!

This is a question I get asked a lot when a potential client first contacts me. And really, which session works best for your family really depends on your situation. And it may change from year to year! Some years you may want something fast and local (Petite Session) and some years you may want something a little more custom.

On the blog today I dive deep into the differences between Signature Sessions, Petite Sessions, Adventure Sessions and Mini Sessions, along with links to view examples of each type of session AND the 2024 Welcome Guide links for each session so you can get alllll of the information about each session.

I used to think that when my kids became teenagers, my life would be simpler because they wouldn’t need me every minute of the day. Boy was I wrong! If you have teens and tweens you know that as they get older, life gets busier and busier! And that means finding time to squeeze in a family photoshoot can sometimes get put on the back burner (maybe for years!) So from one mom-of-teens to another, here are some tips on getting those shots with your kids!

1. Look at weekday dates - As kids get older, their schedules get busier — especially on the weekends with sports tournaments and other activities. In early fall sunset is around 7:00 pm, which often gives families time to do a photoshoot after work or school.

2. Take a mini trip - If sports schedules are not a problem for your family, consider taking advantage of my Limited Edition Adventure sessions and make a mini vacay out of it! I have two options this fall — beach sessions and fall color in Tahoe!

3. Make it cool - Teens and tweens like pictures in cool locations. They may not want to splash around in a river or climb on rocks like little kids do, but there are so many amazing locations in the central valley and surrounding areas including awesome urban locations, rustic wineries and ranches and charming gold-rush era towns.

4. Book early - I know fall can sneak up on us, but sessions book very quickly in the fall, so if you wait until it FEELS like fall, it’s likely that session availability will be limited (if not completely unavailable). So do yourself a favor, and book early when you have the most options to schedule around your kids’ schedules.

5. Make it fun - And finally, don’t make the session seem like a chore— do something fun afterwards like grabbing dinner or ice cream at your favorite spot. When they know they will get something fun afterwards, the photoshoot doesn’t seem so bad!

So what's planned for the summer?

• Carmel Beach: I have had requests for years to shoot at Carmel Beach, and it's no surprise! It's got to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole state! I will have several Limited Edition time slots available as well as spots for Senior sessions. Senior sessions can also be shot in Monterey (perfect if you love the historic, spanish-style buildings!)

• River mini sessions: For families who want a mini session close to home, river sessions are perfect on those hot, summer days!

• South Lake Tahoe: My ALL TIME favorite location! I will have family limited edition spots as well as spots for senior session. SENIORS: I get more requests for flower sessions, than anything else. If you want wildflowers, water, mountains, meadows or forests for your senior session, THIS IS THE PERFECT SESSION FOR YOU!

• Sunflower mini sessions: I have had so many requests for sunflower minis and they are finally here, for one night only! These will go fast, so get on that waitlist if you want a spot!

• Signature Family Sessions: If you want a different date, more time at your session, or a different location, a Signature Session is perfect for you! There's much more flexibility on dates and we shoot the session at the location of your choice!

• Senior Sessions: It may seem strange to shoot your senior session before you have started your senior year, but every single one of my seniors who have done their session in the summer have told me later how glad they were they did it when their schedule wasn't as busy and they didn't have to try to squeeze it in during their busy senior year. You also have way more flexibility on dates AND you'll have your senior photos to show off on your socials all year long! (BONUS: You'll get to take advantage of ALL of the Pop-up sessions I do for my seniors!)

Why do I do a fashion consult before every senior session?

⭐ So I can plan out which outfits will be shot at each location. I scout out specific spots for specific outfits -- notice how outfits coordinate with the background? That's not an accident!

⭐ To help you figure out exactly what you're going to wear from head to toe. I know it's overwhelming to figure out outfits for your session! I have been photographing seniors and families for a long time and I know what will photograph well. If you're unsure about what to wear, I can help! I also help to make sure the outfits you have chosen will work well for what we have planned for your session. Some outfits may be cute but if they're too hard to move around in or pose in different ways, they will not be a good option for your session.

⭐ To make sure we don't forget anything. Accessories add those special details to a photo so you don't want to forget them! And there is nothing worse than getting to your session and realizing you only brought heels and you want to do a casual outfit!

But the biggest reason I do a fashion consult is to help you feel confident and prepared for your session. I want you to be comfortable and excited the day of your session, not nervous! And a fashion consult is one way I help you do that.

How many looks can you have at your session? LOTS! I don't limit the number of outfits you can have at your session -- you can keep changing into outfits until we run out of sun. I typically suggest bringing at least 4 and I've photographed up to 9 in one session! (how fast can you change?) 😀

Lucie slayed her session and I loved every. single. look on her!

Spring has been showing off in California this month and I've been in heaven!

Wildflowers are definitely the top request for my senior girls and it's a little bit of a gamble every year. Wildflowers don't always bloom in the same place or at the same time -- or even the same variety! We got lucky this year!

Class of 2025 PRO TIP -- if you want wildflowers in your senior photos, BOOK THIS SUMMER for wildflowers in the mountains! You'll have your wildflower photos to share all year long and you won't have to wait until the end of your senior year when your schedule will be packed with end-of-the-year activities!

I am so excited to introduce a brand new mini session fundraiser event geared at raising money for teen mental health programs!

So what IS Project Beauty?

🌟 Project Beauty was created in 2017 by a fellow photographer, Thomas Nguyen, with the goal to redefine what true beauty is. The idea was to create portraits that were 100% authentic — no make-up, no retouching. Project Beauty has since turned into a movement to empower teens with their own authentic image and to counteract what the media, social media and other influences in the world tell our teens about beauty.

🌟 The fundraiser event will be held June 4 and 10 and the $100 donation will benefit in Lodi. One-Eighty is an amazing organization that has served the community since 2002 with a variety of programs including professional counseling, a Teen Center in downtown Lodi, volunteer programs in a number of local schools and adventure programs that provide teens with the means to get out in nature and explore (something I am super passionate about!)

🌟 The sessions are open to all teens from 6th-12th grades and will be held at in Galt. A HUGE thank you to Champaign Ranch for sponsoring the photoshoots. The location is absolutely stunning and they are amazing to work with!!
