Sen. Franklin Johnson revealed during Monday’s swearing-in ceremony his battle with prostate cancer in a video message he prepared documenting his journey.

Johnson first came onto the political map as the campaign manager for former Gov. Kenneth Mapp, leading its grassroots movement. Once elected, Mapp named Johnson his senior policy adviser on political affairs. He first assumed office as a senator in 2021.

He urged that all men in the territory and beyond get regular screenings for prostate cancer, as he cited that the cancer is very slow and treatable in its early stages.

“All it takes is a blood test, a very simple PSA, to find out if you have an enlarged prostate, to find out if your prostate has been swollen,” he said. “I am urging all men by the time you hit 40 to start doing your PSA, do them every year. Prostate cancer is one of the slowest cancer, so when you hear someone that dies from … prostate cancer is because they never did a check, they never find out what their status is.”
