It was on this day one year ago that you came into my life. You were rather….early. Really really early. I was not expecting to meet you until December 15th, but God just had other plans. The 8 days prior to your arrival were hard and scary but nothing compared to the 86 days you stayed in the hospital after you were born. Those were some of the hardest days of my life.
But one year ago, at 2:52am and only 25 weeks old, the most magical thing happened. All 2 pounds 3 ounces of you changed the course of my life forever.
You may not realize what a different person I was before you…and I am glad you won’t. I am so much better than I ever imagined I could be. Because of you, I learned so much about myself, my friends, my family and most of all the resilience in you.
I learned that there is nothing the world can throw at me that God will not pull me through. You were so small and fragile and each hour was a miracle that you were still with us. You would not believe the community of people we had around us- supporting us, feeding us, listening to us, praying with us and for us…daily. They are how I managed to get through each day. Some of these people I have known my whole lives, some of them I only know because of you, and some of them I have never even met. You are so loved - and I do not mean just by me.
The biggest thing I learned in this last year is that you will never feel God’s presence in your life stronger than you do in the trenches. Not everyone can be born at such a young age and do nothing but thrive. Yes - there were a ton of scary moments, but overall you have done nothing but defy the odds. You are a fighter of giants, just like Caleb from the Bible who inspired your name, and there is nothing you will not be able to do in your life.
So, after shedding a few tears this morning as Leah sang you Happy Birthday, I now sit here in awe of all that you were and are. You have forever changed me, and I will love you more than I will ever be able to express.
Happy Birthday munchkin- may each year prove over and over again that God is real and that He is alive.
