🎵 Happy Flute & Piccolo Day 🎉 On December 8th, we commemorate the lovely sounds of these woodwind wonders that bring music to our ears. This day marks the birthday of Sir James Galway, the 'Man with the Golden Flute,' and recognizes his contributions to the world of music.

🎼 Fun facts:

In orchestras and other genres, the flute's warm, mellow tones and the piccolo's brilliant, crisp sound form a harmonic symphony.

Piccolo means small in Italian, highlighting its smaller size compared to the flute.

Music for the flute is written in treble clef, whereas music for the piccolo is written in concert pitch notation.

Yesterday, our BYU Flute Choir students performed piccolo, C flute, alto flute, and bass flute. And they delivered an outstanding show!

Originally crafted from old oil drums, it's become a symbol of Caribbean culture and a sound recognized worldwide. Its versatile sound has graced everything from jazz and pop to classical compositions, showcasing its ability to transcend cultural boundaries.

🎶 Happy Clarinet Day! Today, we're honoring the soulful sounds of this remarkable instrument, in tribute to the legacy of Ralph G. Laycock (1920-2006), a distinguished former Professor of Music at BYU.

Dr. Laycock served as the Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Coordinator of Instrumental Organizations for the Department of Music. Hailing from Canada, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music from BYU, a Master of Science in Orchestral Conducting from the The Juilliard School, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance with a major in Conducting from the University of Southern California.

🤔 Ever wondered how the first hymnal was compiled?

1830: A revelation was given to Joseph Smith in July, just three months after the Church was formally established, instructing his wife Emma to "make a selection of sacred hymns" for the Church of Latter-day Saints.

1835: The first hymnal, "A Collection of Sacred Hymns for the Church of the Latter Day Saints," was released despite threats and persecution.

1889 & 1908: Additional editions with different hymns were published, such as "Latter-day Psalmody" and "Songs of Zion".

1985: The most recent hymnal, "Hymns," featuring 341 songs in nearly 40 languages, was released by the Church.

2018: The Church announced plans for a revised hymnbook to accommodate the various needs of its international members.

📖 Since the release of the first hymnal, Church members have been receiving comfort, strength, and inspiration. As changes approach, the purpose of the hymnal will remain the same, as was the instruction Emma Smith received from the Lord when she first began compiling a hymnbook.
