I had the honor of teaching a class today entitled, “Navigating the Landscape of Loss and Grief” for 🙌
such an honor to journey with 17 amazing people exploring how they will be a blessing to the world ! 🙌 One of the breakout sessions was where they discussed the various stages of grieving and rituals that might be appropriate as a spiritual care provider. While they were in their breakout session, I created this Mandala with a piece to represent each of the students… And used the crying unicorn I had lit at the beginning of the class with its waxed tears that remain. What I love about creating or a is that it exemplifies the impermanence in our life. I will keep this mandala in place for a while, but then I will take the pieces away and they will await the next creation.

Two sacred guests arrived this morning to witness a graveside service I officiated for a baby that was born sleeping. 🙌🦌
In an attempt to share words of comfort, I shared
A Japanese metaphor for the process of healing ❤️‍🩹 and finding beauty in the brokenness 💔
is an unending process and informs the continued beating of our hearts.
These two deer provided some peace in the midst of immense pain. And they stayed for the whole service. ❤️

Grateful for the opportunity to be on a panel tonight after a viewing of this film. Please take time to view if you have interest. I was honored to be in community on the panel with an outstanding collection of Spiritual Care Providers at Lighthouse Mosque in Oakland, Calfifornia. Some of the questions we were asked were:

1. How do chaplains' various identities (spiritual, racial/ethnic, gender, etc.) impact their work and experience as chaplains? (Particularly when one or more of these identities is marginalized within the work setting or larger society)

2. What does it look like to support the spiritual development of people in institutional settings?

3. What does it mean to be grounded in one's own faith tradition, no matter what it is, to be able to amply serve others (of the same or different faith traditions, or no identified faith tradition)?

What I wish I could share with Robert Hogue after his interview on PBS Newshour…

I just watched your interview on PBS Newshour and my heart is full. As the child of a WWII veteran who served in the Army, and I was born in the 60s… I’ve always had an odd juxtaposition of those who serve. I am so grateful for your service and I’m so grateful for your sharing on this 20th anniversary of that horrific day on 9/11. It is difficult to be called to be trained for the worst case scenario. I have in my life transferred to a career as a chaplain and although I can never understand serving in any of the branches of service… I understand being trained for the worst case and hoping that never comes. And when it does… Being prepared with all my humanness and imperfections to let the spirit lead. And thank you thank you thank you for being who you are and following the call that you have been given, and sharing. May God bless you for your continued journey.
