Happy 2nd birthday to us!🎉🎉🎉
A few months ago, I saw a childhood acquaintance after 20 years, and she said to me (I paraphrase)—-Look at you running this business and doing nothing with your teaching credential!
I gotta admit, I was a little taken aback. I mean, 1. Wtf?, and 2. What the fuc%??? (Like, girl, you don’t me!😂)
See, I left teaching 5 years ago, after 10 years in the classroom. And I was good. I mean I was REALLY GOOD at my job. I was the teacher kids could trust, the team player, the program header, the staff development trainer, the after school hours and no summer because I was working for no extra pay and every hour of every weekend working high school English teacher.
And it was TOO. DAMN. MUCH. Because what they ask teachers to do in the classroom with 45 kids per period and outside the classroom for absolutely no extra pay is just too damn much. And I burnt out. And I turned 30 and asked myself, can I do this for 30 more years? Now, this isn’t every teacher’s story, but it’s mine. I decided the answer was no, So I left.
5 years ago, I decided that I could start over. Some people may look at that as a waste of an education or a decade. But I see it as brave. Because I loved what I did. I learned so much from what I did. And my 10 years with those kids, making a difference in their lives, them making a major difference in mine…that was worth every freaking second and penny of my BA, my teaching credential, and my MA. And all of that was exactly who I was and what I needed and where I should be…until it just wasn’t anymore.
